Who it suits
Is it right for you?
Great for
- Perch and zander lure anglers. The 1000, C2000S HG and 2500S HG sizes suit light-to-medium rods, braid and repeated casting without feeling daft on the outfit.
- General predator anglers wanting one dependable reel. The 2500, C3000 and 4000 sizes give you useful flexibility for soft plastics, hardbaits and heavier lure work.
Maybe skip if
- Ultra-keen finesse anglers chasing the lightest possible outfit. There are lighter, more specialist reels higher up Shimano’s range, so the Nasci may feel a bit chunky on a delicate set-up.
- Anglers wanting a genuinely sealed reel for regular harsh saltwater use. CoreProtect helps on most versions, but this remains better viewed as a freshwater and inshore reel than a full-on marine workhorse.

The full rundown
Everything you'll want to know about the Shimano Nasci FC
The Shimano Nasci FC is one of those reels that makes a lot of sense for predator anglers. No daft gimmicks. No peacock feathers. Just a solid spinning reel with a good spread of sizes and the sort of Shimano engineering that makes repeated casting feel less of a chore. For perch, zander, pike and general lure fishing, it sits in a very useful bit of the range.
The big attraction is choice. There’s a little 500 for proper lightweight work, a 1000 and C2000S HG for finesse outfits, then the popular 2500 and C3000 sizes for all-round lure fishing. At the other end, the 4000 XG and C5000 XG are ready for bigger lures, heavier braid and more serious predator duties. Match the reel to the rod and it’ll feel bob on.
For a light perch outfit, the NAS500FC is a tiny option at 6 oz, with a 5.6:1 gear ratio. It’s aimed at small lures, light line and delicate rods rather than hauling a lump out of cabbage beds. The NAS1000FC weighs 7.2 oz and uses a 5:1 ratio, making it a sensible step up when you want a little more capacity without turning the outfit into a broom handle.
The NAS2500HGFC is arguably the range’s sweet spot for many UK lure anglers. At 8.5 oz, with a 6.2:1 gear ratio, it offers a useful mix of speed, capacity and manageable weight. That higher retrieve is handy when you’re taking up slack after a twitchy soft-plastic retrieve, or when a pike follows right to the net and suddenly decides to leg it.
Shimano packs in some well-known tech here. HAGANE Gear and X-Ship are there to support smooth, efficient winding under load, while SilentDrive is aimed at reducing unwanted noise and play. That matters when you’re firing out cast after cast, especially with a lure that needs a steady retrieve. You want the handle turning cleanly, not feeling like it’s full of gravel.
The G-Free Body is designed to help balance the reel on the rod, which is a dead handy thing when you’re working a lure all day. A better-balanced outfit puts less strain on your wrist and makes it easier to keep contact with a jighead, dropshot rig or suspending hardbait. It won’t turn a poor rod into a wand, mind, but it can make a nicely matched outfit feel more natural.
The front drag is another important bit. The smaller 500 and 1000 models are rated to 7 lb, while the 2500 and C3000 models go to 20 lb. The 4000 and C5000 versions step up to 24 lb. You won’t need all that for most perch fishing, but the extra headroom is useful when a pike turns for the snags or a zander gives you a proper thump at close range.
Line management is helped by Shimano’s AR-C Spool, and that’s exactly the sort of feature you appreciate when you’re casting light lures. A tidy spool lip can help braid leave the reel cleanly, though your knots, line fill and leader connection still matter. Keep the spool sensibly filled, use a neat leader knot and don’t expect any reel to cure a badly behaved coil of old braid.
There is one cheeky catch with the range: the NAS500FC doesn’t include CoreProtect, SilentDrive or X-Ship. That doesn’t make it useless — far from it — but it’s a more basic proposition than the larger models. If you’re buying mainly for finesse, that may be perfectly fair. If you want the fullest feature set, look at the 1000 upwards.
Overall, the Nasci FC is a cracking middle-ground reel. It has enough polish for regular lure fishing, enough size variety to build a properly matched outfit and enough drag for most freshwater predator scenarios. It’s not the last word in weight or luxury, but if you want dependable kit without going completely skint, this one deserves a proper look.

Our take
Why the Nasci FC makes sense for predator fishing
This isn’t a reel built around one flashy headline feature. Its appeal is the blend of HAGANE Gear, X-Ship, SilentDrive, CoreProtect, a decent front drag and a broad size range. That makes it easy to match to a light perch outfit, a general lure rod or a more powerful pike set-up.
The Nasci FC is especially appealing when you’re fishing lots of casts, working soft plastics or hardbaits and need a reel that stays comfortable as the session rolls on. It’s not the lightest or most luxurious option in Shimano’s range, but it gets the important stuff right.
What you’re buying
A smooth, versatile reel family
The Nasci FC range runs from a compact 500 to a powerful C5000 XG. That’s useful because predator fishing covers a lot of ground. A tiny reel on a light perch rod feels lively; a 4000 or C5000 on a pike outfit gives you the capacity and control for heavier braid and bigger lures.
Most models get Shimano’s 4+1 bearing layout, HAGANE Gear, X-Ship, SilentDrive, CoreProtect, G-Free Body, AR-C Spool and Cross Carbon Drag. The 500 is the odd one out, missing CoreProtect, SilentDrive and X-Ship. Check the exact model before buying, especially if those features matter to you.
Worth knowing. The Nasci name covers several quite different jobs. Don’t buy by price alone. A 500 for finesse and a C5000 XG for pike fishing may share a family name, but they’re very different tools on the bank.
Match it to your fishing
Pick the size, then crack on
Perch anglers fishing small spinners, tiny crankbaits, ned rigs or light jigheads should look at the 500, 1000 or C2000S HG. The 2500S HG is the safer all-rounder if you’re mixing finesse with slightly bigger soft plastics and want a bit more breathing room.
For general predator work, the 2500 or C3000 models are easy recommendations. They’ll sit nicely on many medium lure rods and give you a useful blend of drag, capacity and retrieve speed. The C3000 HG adds a quicker pickup when you’re fishing fast or dealing with lots of slack.
Pike anglers using heavier lures, thicker braid and robust leaders should move to the 4000 XG or C5000 XG. The quicker 6.2:1 gearing is handy for taking up line, while the bigger drag rating gives you plenty of control. Keep your trace proper, mate — no reel replaces bite protection.
Quick answers
The bits you’ll want to know
The Nasci FC is best seen as a freshwater and inshore saltwater spinning reel. CoreProtect on most models adds useful protection, but regular rinsing after saltwater use is still essential. Don’t leave salty water drying around the line roller and bail arm.
Retrieve speed varies across the range, from roughly 26 to 41 inches per crank. The faster XG models are useful when you need to pick up slack quickly, while a slower ratio can feel more controlled with steady retrieves and resistance-heavy lures.
Worth knowing. A decent reel only works properly when the rest of the outfit is right. Fill the spool neatly, use braid that suits the rod and lure weight, and check your leader knot before a bite-time session. That little bit of faff can save a very annoying lost fish.

- Good feature set for the money, including HAGANE Gear and CoreProtect on most models.

Worth knowing
- The 500 model misses out on CoreProtect, SilentDrive and X-Ship.

- Model names and spool sizes can get confusing, especially around the C2000S and 2500S HG options.

Can you use the Nasci FC in saltwater?
Shimano describes it as suitable for inshore saltwater fishing. Give it a good freshwater rinse after every saltwater session and don’t treat it like a fully sealed offshore reel.
