Who it suits
Is it right for you?
Great for
- Pike and zander lure anglers. The rapid line pickup makes it easier to keep contact with moving lures, lift slack and react quickly to a screaming take.
- Anglers wanting one robust predator reel. The capacity, drag and corrosion-conscious features give it plenty of range for rivers, reservoirs, canals and occasional saltwater use.
Maybe skip if
- Ultra-light lure anglers. The C5000 format and 290 g weight are more suited to medium and heavier work than tiny finesse outfits.
- Anglers who constantly swap line types. There’s no spare spool listed, so switching from one braid setup to another isn’t especially dead handy.

Quick verdict
The verdict
The Stradic FM C5000 XG is a serious bit of predator tackle. It’s light enough for a day of chucking lures, yet has the body strength, drag capacity and line room for proper pike, zander and hard-running saltwater work.
The fast 6.2:1 gearing is the headline act. It picks up 101 cm of line per turn, making it bob on for keeping contact with lures and taking up slack quickly. It’s not cheap, and there’s no spare spool, but the package is seriously well-rounded.

Aluminium/HAGANE construction, MicroModule II, X-Ship, DuraCross and corrosion-conscious features make this a premium package.
The 101 cm retrieve and smooth, supported gearing suit fast lure work and quick line control.
Fast pickup, generous capacity and a capable drag can make a real difference when fish run towards you or head for cover.
It’s straightforward and versatile, though the heavier C5000 size and fast gearing won’t suit every rod or lure style.
The build and feature set justify a premium price, but the missing spare spool takes a little shine off.

The full rundown
Everything you'll want to know about the Shimano Stradic FM C5000 XG
The Shimano Stradic FM C5000 XG is the sort of reel that makes a lot of sense when your predator fishing covers more than one job. Pike lures, zander work, bigger perch tactics, light shore work — it’s got the range. Not tiny and dainty, mind. This is the beefier C5000 size, built for proper line capacity and a bit of backbone when a lump turns up.
The XG part is the main talking point. With a 6.2:1 gear ratio and 101 cm of retrieve per handle turn, this reel shifts line quickly. That’s dead handy when a lure comes back towards you, when a pike follows right to the net, or when a gust has dumped a load of slack between rod tip and lure. A couple of fast turns and you’re back in touch.
For predator fishing, that contact matters. You want to feel the lure ticking weed, bumping gravel or glancing off a snag. You also want to stay ready for a bite that comes at you rather than tearing away. The Stradic’s fast pickup helps with both. It won’t do the thinking for you, of course, but it gives you a useful bit of breathing room when things kick off.
The C5000 body also gives you more line room than the smaller Stradic sizes. Shimano lists capacity up to PE 3/200 m, with PE 2/300 m and PE 1.5/400 m also covered. That’s plenty of runway for long casts, deep venues and situations where a lively fish decides it wants to visit the far bank. For most UK predator work, you’ll have ample braid capacity rather than cutting it fine.
At 290 g, it isn’t a featherweight finesse reel. That’s no bad thing if you’re pairing it with a medium or medium-heavy predator rod, chucking bigger hardbaits or working soft plastics all day. On a short, light perch outfit, though, it could feel a bit much. Balance is everything. If the reel makes the rod nose-heavy, your wrists will soon let you know about it.
The aluminium/HAGANE Body is aimed at keeping everything sitting square under load. That matters when you’re leaning into a snaggy fish or grinding a lure through heavy cover. Inside, MicroModule II Gear and X-Ship are designed to give the retrieve a smooth, supported feel, while also helping the gearing cope with pressure. In plain English: less of that rough, loose sensation when the going gets tasty.
The 11 kg maximum drag gives you plenty of headroom. You won’t normally fish a predator reel with the drag locked solid, and you shouldn’t, but having reserve power is useful. Set it sensibly for your braid, trace and target species, then let the DuraCross drag do its job when a fish makes a sudden run. Smooth control is far more important than simply boasting a big number.
There’s some useful protection for damp and grubby bank life too. X-Protect and S A-RB shielded anti-rust bearings are welcome features around spray, wet nets and the odd rainy session. They don’t mean you can dunk the reel and forget about it. Give it sensible care, wipe it down and keep grit away from the line roller and moving parts. Basic housekeeping still saves a lot of faff.
The main compromise is the gearing. Fast is brilliant for lure control and slack pickup, but a slower reel can sometimes feel more relaxed when winching a bulky lure at a crawl or pulling against serious resistance. There’s also no spare spool listed, which is a bit naff at this price level. Still, if you want a fast, strong and versatile predator reel rather than a specialist finesse tool, the Stradic FM C5000 XG is a cracking option.

Our take
The big angle
This isn’t just a reel for smashing big baits out all day. The C5000 XG sits in a useful middle ground: light enough for lure work, but with enough spool capacity and drag to cope when a proper lump decides to head for the snags.
That high-speed retrieve is especially handy for pike lure fishing, weed-choked waters and situations where you need to get a bait moving quickly. Pair it with suitable braid, a wire or heavy fluorocarbon trace, and it’s a very capable predator setup.
Closer look
A fast reel with proper backbone
The C5000 XG combines a 6.2:1 ratio with 101 cm of line pickup per turn. That makes it particularly useful for lure fishing, where keeping contact and removing slack quickly can turn a missed hit into a solid connection.
Its aluminium/HAGANE Body, MicroModule II Gear and X-Ship give the reel a suitably solid foundation. Add the 11 kg maximum drag, DuraCross drag, X-Protect and shielded S A-RB bearings, and it’s clearly aimed at anglers who want more than a delicate canal reel.
The AR-C Long Stroke Spool is designed around casting performance and line management. Capacity is generous, with room for heavier braid as well as lighter predator setups. The one-piece bail is another reassuring touch for regular lure chucking.
Worth knowing. XG gearing is brilliant for speed, but it can feel more lively than a slower reel when you’re working big resistance at a crawl. Match it with a rod and lure range that suit its fast character.
Who it suits
A strong all-rounder for predator anglers
Pike anglers will appreciate the quick line pickup when a fish follows a lure right to the bank or turns towards you. It also has the capacity and drag reserve for open-water casts and hard runs. Use proper bite protection — no reel makes ordinary line pike-proof.
For zander, the fast retrieve helps when fishing soft plastics and keeping in touch with a lure over depth changes. It’s also a sensible choice for larger perch tackle, especially where long casts, wind or weed make a small reel feel under-gunned.
The C5000 format suits medium and heavier predator rods best. If your fishing is all tiny crankbaits and ultra-light jigheads, a smaller, lighter reel will probably balance better and feel less tiring.
Worth knowing. Think about your spool plan before buying. With no spare spool listed, changing between braid strengths isn’t a quick swap. Choose your main line around the waters and lures you fish most.
FAQs in full
The questions anglers usually ask
Is 101 cm per turn too fast for predator fishing? Not really. It’s especially useful for keeping up with a fish, taking in slack and speeding a lure back for another cast. You can still retrieve slowly by turning the handle steadily; the reel simply gives you more line pickup when you need it.
Can it handle braid? Yes. The listed capacity includes PE 1.5, PE 2 and PE 3, so it covers a broad spread of predator applications. Use backing where appropriate, fill the spool neatly and avoid overfilling, as a tidy spool helps prevent annoying wind knots.
Is it suitable for occasional saltwater use? The X-Protect treatment and S A-RB shielded anti-rust bearings offer welcome protection, but rinse and maintain the reel properly after saltwater sessions. Protection reduces risk; it doesn’t replace care.
