River Thames — Charvil / Wargrave (Twyford & District Fishing Club)

A cracking three-quarter-mile Thames stretch from Buch Ait down to the mouth of Borough Marsh Stream. It’s a member-run Twyford & District Fishing Club venue with 30 pegs, plenty of island cover and a proper mix of bream, chub, roach, barbel and winter pike.

We don't publish an "ideal level" — nobody can promise one. Flood water is dangerous: if it's up and coloured, stay well back from the edge. Open River Ready

The lowdown

  • This is rural Thames fishing, with islands, pasture and floodplain scenery giving the place a lovely bit of space. The stretch starts downstream of Buch Ait and runs past Hallsmead Ait and The Lynch.
  • Pegs 1–7 are the bream and skimmer numbers. A good area to keep in mind if you fancy settling in with a feeder and looking for a few bites.
  • Pegs 8–21 face Hallsmead Ait and are the main chub water. Look for the crease, cover and steady flow. Chub are the big draw here.
  • Roach show particularly well from late summer into early autumn, so that’s a handy seasonal window for lighter tackle and a more active approach.
  • Pegs 21–25 sit on a wider section of river. That change in shape is worth noting, especially when you’re working out where the flow slows or spreads.
  • The Platforms pegs, 25–30, are the place for barbel from the middle of the river. A feeder approach is the obvious shout when the flow has a bit of colour and the fish are on the munch.
  • There’s more chub against the island opposite The Lynch. Island edges can be proper fish-holding water, so don’t ignore the far-bank line.
  • The wider Platforms area can produce pike in winter. With the venue open from 16 June to 14 March, there’s a decent autumn and winter window to target them.
  • Access is via gates along St Patrick’s Stream or the gate beside the stone bridge. Follow fence lines, then walk the banks — no cutting across the open fields.
  • Parking beside swims is a no-go. In summer you can park closer to the bank, but follow the track and park behind the copse. The river-bank car park may shut when the ground gets too wet, usually around 1 October.

Methods: Feeder fishing suits the bream, skimmers and barbel, while lighter trotting or float work should come into its own for late-summer and early-autumn roach. For chub, work the island edges, Hallsmead Ait-facing pegs and the cover around The Lynch.
