Carlisle Angling Association River Eden Fishery

Carlisle Angling Association controls roughly 7 miles of River Eden, with mainly double-bank fishing around Carlisle and down towards the lower Eden. It’s a proper mixed fishery, from quick streams and glides to calm water and a tidal lower reach.

We don't publish an "ideal level" — nobody can promise one. Flood water is dangerous: if it's up and coloured, stay well back from the edge. Open River Ready

The lowdown

  • There are 27 named pools to get your teeth into, and the association publishes maps showing the beats and nearby parking. Handy stuff when you’re planning a day.
  • A lot of the fishing is double-bank, so there’s plenty of water to explore. Some parks have parking right beside the river; other sections need an easy walk in.
  • The river’s got a bit of everything. Fast-flowing streams and lively glides sit alongside slower, calmer sections where fish can settle and feed.
  • The lower reaches run into tidal water, with the chance of good-sized slob trout. It’s a different game down there, especially when the river carries a bit of colour.
  • Salmon, sea trout and brown trout are present, alongside grayling, chub and dace. The association doesn’t stock the water and says most fish are wild native stock.
  • The fishery stays open through winter for grayling, chub and dace. A cracking time for trotting or light feeder work where the rules allow, with fish holding in steadier winter swims.
  • Salmon fishing before 16 June is fly or artificial lure only under the stated regulations. From 1 June, fishing is fly-only unless the Linstock river-level exception applies.
  • There’s no spinning for brown trout or coarse fish. Maggots are banned from 15 March to 15 June, while worm fishing is closed from 15 October to 16 June, with the stated juvenile exception.
  • Keepnets, ground baiting and swim feeders are generally prohibited from 15 January to 14 October. Carry a landing net and forceps for migratory fish, and don’t hog a section of water.

Methods: Fly fishing is central for salmon and trout, with artificial lures allowed for salmon before 16 June under the regulations. In the winter coarse and grayling water, trotting or straightforward feeder work can suit the steadier glides where permitted.

Key rules

  • Salmon season runs from 15 January to 14 October inclusive, and salmon must be returned immediately with minimal injury.
  • A maximum of two sea trout per angler per season may be kept.
  • Salmon fishing before 16 June is restricted to artificial fly or artificial lure under the stated regulations.
  • From 1 June, fishing is fly-only unless the Linstock river-level exception applies.
  • Spinning is not allowed for brown trout or coarse fish.
  • Maggots are prohibited from 15 March through 15 June inclusive.
  • Worm fishing is prohibited from 15 October through 16 June, except for juveniles fishing for non-migratory trout and coarse fish.
  • Gaffs are prohibited; trout under nine inches must be returned, and brown trout, sea trout and salmon may not be sold.

Coarse fishing on English rivers is closed from 15 March to 15 June inclusive. That's the law for coarse fish on rivers — it's not a club rule, and game-fishing seasons work differently.
