We don't publish an "ideal level" — nobody can promise one. Flood water is dangerous: if it's up and coloured, stay well back from the edge. Open River Ready

The lowdown

  • This is a private, tucked-away stretch, set well back from the public road and surrounded by woodland, wildflowers and plenty of wildlife.
  • The fishing runs for 1.8 miles on the left bank, split across 15 named pools. That gives you loads of water to explore rather than just one or two swims.
  • There’s a cracking little fishing hut in the woodland, opposite the renowned Lacy’s Caves. A handy base between spells on the river.
  • The Viaduct is described as excellent trout water and good fly water. It’s also one of the spots where a wading stick and life jacket are especially recommended.
  • The Falls is really good trout water, while Long Meg is the high-water pool and a good spring pool. Worth keeping in mind when the river’s carrying a bit of colour.
  • Other named pools include The Meadow, The Bathing Rock, The Sandbank, The Caves, The Three Rocks, Johnstone’s, The Willows, Lower Willows, The Post & Island Foot, Daleraven, The Mains & The Wall and The Gravel Bed.
  • It’s strictly fly fishing only, so leave the spinning gear at home. The holder recommends barbless flies, with salmon fishing catch and release.
  • Chest waders are recommended, though thigh waders may do in most pools. Wading can be dangerous, so take care, especially around the Viaduct. A wading stick and life jacket are sensible kit.
  • Some bank fishing is possible, particularly at low water. Four parking areas serve the beat, but access varies from general vehicles in summer to 4x4-only parking at P4.

Methods: Fly fishing only, targeting Atlantic salmon, brown trout and grayling. The beat includes trout water, a high-water pool and some bank fishing at low water, with barbless flies recommended.
