We don't publish an "ideal level" — nobody can promise one. Flood water is dangerous: if it's up and coloured, stay well back from the edge. Open River Ready
The lowdown
- The Eastfield stretch starts upstream of Eastfield Bridge, on the northern outskirts of Kirkby Stephen.
- It runs up to the flow station beside the Kirkby Stephen–Warcop road. No exact mileage is given for this particular stretch.
- There’s good fly water upstream of the bridge, with the fishing continuing past a waterfall and beyond.
- Wading is necessary when conditions are appropriate, so keep an eye on the river before committing to it.
- Above the top bend, the character changes. The river becomes deep and slow flowing, with a different sort of swim to pick apart.
- Trees and dense vegetation make the upper section trickier. Proper stealth and tidy casting will be handy here.
- Day and weekly ticket holders are fly-only for trout and grayling. Spinning is off-limits, apart from for junior members.
- The water holds wild brown trout, and KSDAA does not stock its waters. A natural-looking Eden ticket, basically.
- The trout season runs from 15 March to 30 September inclusive. Grayling can be fished from 16 June to 31 January.
- The whole of the association’s water is closed from 1 February to 14 March inclusive. Catch-and-release and barbless hooks are strongly encouraged.
Methods: Fly fishing is the main game here, with wading where conditions allow. Work the quicker fly water around the bridge and waterfall, then expect deeper, slower water above the top bend.
