Netherwood Mead

Netherwood Mead is Wimborne and District Angling Club’s specimen stretch on the River Stour, upstream of Julian’s Bridge. It’s particularly good in summer, with a hefty resident chub population and a proper mix of coarse and game fish.

We don't publish an "ideal level" — nobody can promise one. Flood water is dangerous: if it's up and coloured, stay well back from the edge. Open River Ready

The lowdown

  • This is a club-held section of the Stour at Wimborne, with the fishing rights purchased by Wimborne and District Angling Club back in 1995.
  • The club calls it an excellent specimen stretch. That’s a fair clue that this isn’t just a bend for a few bits and a brew.
  • Chub are the headline act, with resident fish listed to 6 lb or more. Lovely stuff for a bit of trotting or light feeder work when conditions line up.
  • Roach go to 2 lb, bream to 5 lb and perch to 3 lb. A proper mixed coarse-water line-up.
  • There are also specimen barbel to 17 lb or more, so this stretch has some serious grunt in it. Pike are listed to 20 lb too.
  • Dace are present, while brown trout are listed to 5 lb and grayling to 2 lb. The club also lists game fishing for trout and sea trout.
  • Summer is the club’s chosen time to shout about. That’s when the stretch is described as particularly good, so it’s the obvious season to have a proper go.
  • The surrounding Stour country is flat floodplain, with the location described around farm, fishery and market-gardening grassland. Expect a rural setting rather than a built-up town-centre peg.
  • For access, approach Wimborne from Corfe Mullen. There’s a lay-by just before Julian’s Bridge, then walk under the bridge and through the first arch.
  • There’s no confirmed stretch length, peg count, dedicated postcode, night-fishing position or current ticket price on the club information checked. Don’t faff about guessing — check the club before travelling.
  • We're not sure on ticket prices for this one — check with the club or local regulations before you leave.

Methods: A cracking mixed fishery for specimen-minded chub, barbel, bream, perch and pike, with trout and sea-trout fishing also listed. Summer is the obvious window, with your approach depending on which species you fancy targeting.

Key rules

  • The coarse-fishing closed season is enforced.

Coarse fishing on English rivers is closed from 15 March to 15 June inclusive. That's the law for coarse fish on rivers — it's not a club rule, and game-fishing seasons work differently.
