The Leaze – Dorset Stour
The Leaze is a proper quiet bit of Dorset Stour, run by Christchurch Angling Club and stretching from around Julians Bridge down towards the River Allen confluence. It’s lightly fished, but there’s plenty of water to cover, so a roving approach is bob on.

We don't publish an "ideal level" — nobody can promise one. Flood water is dangerous: if it's up and coloured, stay well back from the edge. Open River Ready
The lowdown
- Access is around Julians Bridge, with the fishery running downstream towards where the River Allen joins the Stour. The Canford Bridge stretch starts on the opposite bank at that lower boundary.
- It’s a big, varied wander rather than a sit-in-one-swim sort of venue. The club specifically recommends roving, and there’s a fair bit of water to get through.
- Below Julians Bridge you’ll find deep holes. Worth giving these a proper look, especially when the river has a bit of colour or the fish have tucked themselves away.
- The shallow gravel runs are a different game altogether. Ranunculus creates cracking stalking opportunities, so keep mobile and have a good look before charging in.
- The upper half holds a small head of barbel. Chub can exceed 7 lb, while roach over 2 lb and perch over 3 lb are also reported. Proper river fish, then.
- Good dace are present, with large pike, brown trout, eels, grayling and sea trout also listed for the venue. Game fishing itself isn’t permitted here, mind.
- The river deepens again towards the lower boundary, giving you another change of gear as you work downstream. Summer vegetation can make getting about a bit of a faff.
- Canoes and paddle boards use the stretch, particularly at weekends and during the summer holidays. Keep that in mind when choosing a swim and expect the odd bit of disturbance.
- The fishery is open all year, with extended hours permitted. Night fishing is not allowed, and dogs aren’t permitted. Up to two rods can be used, with braided mainline allowed.
Methods: Roving and stalking are the main themes here. Cover the gravel runs and ranunculus carefully, then switch to deeper holes and the lower, deeper water with suitable trotting or feeder tactics.
