Trill Bridge

Trill Bridge is a spaced-peg stretch of the Upper River Stour, run by Gillingham & District Angling Association. It’s mainly a chub water, with the best-known swims downstream of the bridge and a proper chance of a big bag when they’re having it.

We don't publish an "ideal level" — nobody can promise one. Flood water is dangerous: if it's up and coloured, stay well back from the edge. Open River Ready

The lowdown

  • This is a classic chub-or-bust bit of river. The section has pegs both above and below Trill Bridge, but the downstream swims are the ones that get the nod.
  • The pegs are well spaced, so expect a fair old walk between swims. Bob on if you fancy exploring, less so if you’ve brought half the tackle shop with you.
  • Peg 35 is the bridge swim. Peg 39 is Blackthorns, while Peg 40 is the Willows. Handy landmarks when you’re finding your feet.
  • Big bags of chub are the main attraction here. Dace and roach can turn up mixed in, giving you a few cheeky bonus fish when the chub aren’t fully on the munch.
  • It’s a coarse river section, so keep your approach mobile. Trotting and feeder work are the obvious ways to search the swims and find where the fish are sitting.
  • Expect the bridge area and named swims to draw attention, but don’t ignore the quieter pegs. With plenty of water between swims, there’s scope to look for a crease or a bit of extra cover.
  • The Upper Stour membership season runs from 16 June to 15 March. That gives you a good spread of summer, autumn and winter conditions to work with.
  • Parking is in the lay-by before or after the bridge. It’s tight, so park carefully and don’t block things up for the next angler.
  • Access is via the turning for Whitepost Lakes from the East Stour to Todber road. The first lay-by is just past the bend on the left after the Whitepost Lakes entrance.

Methods: Go mobile with the trotting gear or a feeder and work through the swims, especially around the bridge and the noted downstream pegs. Chub are the target, with dace and roach making up the supporting cast.

Key rules

  • Hold a current Environment Agency rod licence when fishing club waters.
  • Anyone under 16 must be accompanied by an adult.
  • River membership covers the association’s Upper Stour stretches from 16 June to 15 March.
  • River day tickets are available during the coarse-fishing season.
  • Night membership is for Lodden Lakes, not the Trill Bridge river section.

Coarse fishing on English rivers is closed from 15 March to 15 June inclusive. That's the law for coarse fish on rivers — it's not a club rule, and game-fishing seasons work differently.
