We don't publish an "ideal level" — nobody can promise one. Flood water is dangerous: if it's up and coloured, stay well back from the edge. Open River Ready

The lowdown

  • This is proper rural Lune water, tucked between Halton and Caton with a quiet floodplain feel.
  • The river splits into several channels here, creating small islands, varying flows and plenty of water to pick apart.
  • Wooded river margins give the stretch a nice bit of cover, while the grazed water meadow can flood when the river gets up.
  • Keep an eye on river levels before booking. Rising water can change the character of the beat quickly and put parts of the meadow under water.
  • The named quarry is salmon, sea trout and brown trout, so this is very much a migratory and game-fishing stretch.
  • Fly fishing is the obvious starting point, especially when the river has a bit of colour and the flow is pushing through the channels.
  • Spinning and worm fishing are allowed only when the Caton gauge is above 1 foot 6 inches. No guessing there — check the gauge first.
  • If worming for salmon, circle hooks are required. Carry an effective unhooking device every time, too.
  • Season dates matter: salmon run from 1 February to 31 October, migratory trout from 1 April to 30 September, and brown trout from 15 March to 30 September.
  • Day tickets are weekday-only, valid from 08:00 to 22:00 on the date bought. A handy option for a proper day on the Lune, without the faff of joining first.

Methods: Fly fishing suits the varied channels and trout water. Spinning and worm fishing are also permitted when the Caton gauge is above 1 foot 6 inches, with the stated salmon hook and tackle rules followed.

Key rules

  • Day-ticket anglers must release every salmon caught.
  • A current Environment Agency rod licence is required.
  • Spinning and worm fishing are permitted only when the Caton gauge exceeds 1 foot 6 inches.
  • Salmon worm fishing must use circle hooks.
  • An effective unhooking device must be carried at all times.
  • Prawn and shrimp fishing are prohibited.
  • Local Environment Agency byelaws apply.
  • Fishing must follow the published salmon, migratory-trout and non-migratory-trout seasons.

Coarse fishing on English rivers is closed from 15 March to 15 June inclusive. That's the law for coarse fish on rivers — it's not a club rule, and game-fishing seasons work differently.
