We don't publish an "ideal level" — nobody can promise one. Flood water is dangerous: if it's up and coloured, stay well back from the edge. Open River Ready
The lowdown
- This is a single-bank stretch on the left bank, running from 50 metres above Forge Weir upstream to Escow Beck.
- There are twelve rods available each day, so it’s worth booking ahead rather than having a hopeful poke about on the bank.
- The main character here is long, slow, deep pools. Ideal when the Lune has a bit of colour and push in it.
- It’s regarded as much better for high-water fishing than low-water salmon fly work. Big flows are the time to have a proper go.
- Salmon are caught on the fly during high flows. When the river starts dropping, shrimp fishing becomes more successful.
- Sea trout on the fly at night is specifically mentioned as effective. A cheeky evening session could be bob on.
- There’s no wading allowed on the Halton beats, and anglers must keep their fishing on their own side of the central line.
- Coarse fishing is available from 1 November to 14 March, giving the stretch a different feel through the colder months.
- Until 16 June, salmon fishing is restricted to fly and artificial lures under the regional byelaw. After that, all legal methods are allowed, subject to current regulations.
- Parking is available at Hermitage car park on Halton Road. The surrounding Lune Valley is rural, with Halton village nearby, so it’s a fairly peaceful setting for a day by the river.
Methods: Think fly during high water, with shrimp becoming more useful as levels fall. Night-time fly fishing for sea trout is specifically highlighted, while coarse fishing is available in season.
