Grindleton pools — River Ribble

Grindleton Pools is scenic, natural Ribble water run by Ribblesdale Angling Association. It’s mainly a club-members job, with three pools offering a cracking mix of fly fishing, spinning and bait work.

We don't publish an "ideal level" — nobody can promise one. Flood water is dangerous: if it's up and coloured, stay well back from the edge. Open River Ready

The lowdown

  • The association describes the Grindleton and Sawley fishing as one bank of three pools. So, not miles of wandering river — more a tidy run of distinct swims to get your head around.
  • Two pools are geared towards fly fishing, with the sort of pool, glide and moving-water mix that should keep things interesting as conditions change.
  • The third pool is better suited to spinning and bait fishing. Handy when the fly water isn’t playing ball, or when a bit of colour puts the fish on the munch.
  • This is proper natural river fishing, not a stocked commercial venue. The club no longer stocks brown trout on its river waters and says wild brown trout numbers have increased.
  • The association’s waters target salmon, sea trout, wild brown trout and grayling. Coarse fishing is also available on specified beats and at specified times of year.
  • Methods vary with river conditions and the particular beat. Read the flow, look for the crease and adjust rather than forcing one approach all day.
  • Access to all beats is described as easy, with little deep wading required. That’s bob on for keeping mobile and covering the pools without a full-scale faff.
  • Car parking is described as reasonably secure on the association’s fishing waters. Grindleton Bridge is nearby, and the Ribble Way runs through the Grindleton and Sawley corridor.
  • The setting is classic rural Ribble Valley: scenic water near Grindleton and Sawley, with pools, runs and faster water close to the village. The dedicated Grindleton map page is worth checking before heading out.
  • We're not sure on ticket prices for this one — check with the club or local regulations before you leave.

Methods: Fly fishing is the main game on two pools, while the third suits spinning and bait fishing. Coarse fishing is available on specified beats and at specified times of year, with the best approach guided by river conditions and the beat.

Key rules

  • Follow Ribblesdale Angling Association rules for methods, seasons and access.
  • Coarse fishing is available only on specified beats and at specified times of year.
  • A valid Environment Agency rod licence is required for freshwater fishing in England.
  • Check the dedicated Grindleton map page and local association information before fishing.

Coarse fishing on English rivers is closed from 15 March to 15 June inclusive. That's the law for coarse fish on rivers — it's not a club rule, and game-fishing seasons work differently.
