We don't publish an "ideal level" — nobody can promise one. Flood water is dangerous: if it's up and coloured, stay well back from the edge. Open River Ready
The lowdown
- This is rural Ribble fishing with a bit of everything going on. Long riffles, deep glides and chunky pools give you plenty to go at.
- Sale Wheel is the big feature, with substantial depth and a mixed bag of species recorded from the pool. It’s one to spend a little time figuring out.
- The deep glides are made for trotting. Get the float moving naturally and keep an eye on the crease where quicker water meets the steadier stuff.
- Below Sale Wheel, barbel are particularly noted. A feeder or close-in approach around the deeper, pacey water looks bob on when they’re on the munch.
- Brown trout are present, including larger fish in the pools and deeper water. Salmon and sea trout are also named when running.
- Chub and barbel add proper sport to the coarse side, while bream, roach, dace, pike and carp have been recorded at Sale Wheel pool.
- It’s described as suitable for a roving approach, so don’t get glued to one swim. Work the water, move between features and make the most of changing conditions.
- A bit of colour and extra flow should suit the Ribble’s game and barbel fishing. In clearer, lower water, the glides and quieter edges may need a more careful approach.
- Access is on foot from the farm and parking areas, with steep sections and plenty of ups and downs. The Ribble Way forms part of the route along much of the bank, so proper footwear is a smart shout.
- We're not sure on ticket prices for this one — check with the club or local regulations before you leave.
Methods: Roving is the main game here, with trotting through the deep glides and feeder or targeted approaches around the pools and barbel water. Work the riffles, creases and deeper sections rather than sitting it out in one spot.
