River Ouse Fulford

Fulford is a proper Ouse match stretch on the left bank, split into the Pumper, Captains Key and Palace Ings. Day tickets are available, with roach, bream and perch on the cards depending on season, water and boat traffic.

The lowdown

  • This is the YDAA-controlled left bank, running from the top of the first field below the boat moorings down to the beck by the sewerage works, opposite the Archbishop’s Palace.
  • The Pumper starts below the boat moorings and runs to the beck at the top of the green. It’s the summer roach bit, with good catches possible when the river is behaving.
  • Captains Key carries on down to the A64 bypass bridge. Palace Ings starts below the bridge and heads towards the sewerage works, with bream also reported near Fulford Hall and the bottom of Palace Bend.
  • Winter is a big deal here. The venue is popular for matches, and bream move into the Pumper where a feeder approach can do the damage.
  • In summer, maggot feeder tactics can put together mixed bags. Roach and perch are the main names, while worm and caster are handy baits when you fancy a broader bag.
  • Extra water can push fish onto the inner shelf. That’s when targeting roughly 4–6 feet can be bang on, rather than automatically fishing the deepest-looking line.
  • The Ouse is navigable, so boat traffic is part of the game. It can be busy in summer, meaning a bit of patience and adapting your line is sensible.
  • Upper access is from Love Lane, with a walk upstream along the tarmac path and through a kissing gate on the public footpath. The lower section is reached from Naburn Lane via the stone track.
  • The small length on the village green is not YDAA water and must not be used for matches. Keep your fishing to the controlled sections.
  • Night fishing is possible, but only by prior arrangement with the YDAA Waters Secretary and with the required details sent at least 24 hours beforehand.

Methods: Feeder fishing for winter bream is the obvious banker, while summer maggot feeder, trotting-style bait work and worm or caster can sort mixed bags of roach and perch. Keep an eye on extra water, the inner shelf and the boat traffic.

Coarse fishing on English rivers is closed from 15 March to 15 June inclusive. That's the law for coarse fish on rivers — it's not a club rule, and game-fishing seasons work differently.
