River Ouse Naburn

A proper tidal Ouse stretch around Naburn Lock, with mixed coarse and game-fishing rules depending on exactly where and when you fish. The weir pool is the headline bit, holding specimen chub, barbel and salmon, while roach and skimmer bream are the feeder targets.

The lowdown

  • YDAA controls the water from opposite the slipway at Acaster boat yard down to the fence below the downstream end of Naburn Lock mouth.
  • The whole lock area is included, plus the section below the lock to the end of the caravan-park field. That lower bit is managed with Naburn Caravan Park.
  • This is tidal water, so levels can rise and fall quickly. Keep your wits about you, especially around the lock and weir pool. Proper care needed.
  • The weir pool is the interesting feature, with specimen chub and barbel named here, along with salmon. A cracking area to keep in mind when conditions have a bit of colour.
  • Roach and skimmer bream are the named coarse targets. YDAA recommends feeder fishing with maggot or caster for them — nice and simple, bob on.
  • Coarse fishing is closed until 16 June, so don’t turn up early expecting to get a feeder ticking over. Check the calendar before travelling.
  • Game fishing is permit-only from 6 April to 31 October inclusive. From 6 April to 30 June, the water downstream of the falls is restricted to game-permit holders.
  • Naburn Lock and the water upstream are private. Upstream remains York DAA game-permit-only until 30 June, then becomes restricted to York DAA members.
  • There are no listed fishing platforms, toilets, disabled access or on-site parking. The venue is not listed as gated or locked, so plan your arrival rather than assuming facilities.
  • Access is via the A19 from York, then B1222 Naburn Lane. Turn right after Naburn village for the lock. The caravan-park section uses a private road, and the wrong permit means trespassing. Night fishing is not allowed.
  • We're not sure on ticket prices for this one — check with the club or local regulations before you leave.

Methods: For roach and skimmer bream, the recommended approach is feeder fishing with maggot or caster. Around the weir pool, keep the chub and barbel in mind, but stick tightly to the seasonal and permit rules.
