River Ouse Poppleton “Sellars”

Poppleton “Sellars” is a cracking right-bank Ouse stretch north-west of York, running from the paddock above the railway bridge down to below the ring road bridge. It’s a proper winter roach venue, with bream in the deeper areas and plenty of match-stretch pedigree.

The lowdown

  • This is a broad, deep bit of river, with depths reaching around 25 feet in places. When the Ouse has a bit of colour and settles nicely, it can be proper productive.
  • The famous winter game is roach. They shoal in the deeper water towards the end of the season, and catches of more than 20lb of quality fish are possible when conditions line up.
  • Bream often gather above the road bridge, while fish are also resident around the railway bridge. Worth having a good look before settling on a swim.
  • The Stones is a useful warmer-weather area for roach. Hemp and tares are suggested here, especially when the fish are having it and sitting shallower or over cleaner ground.
  • For winter roach, a long-rod float or slider approach with maggot is the suggested route. Keep things tidy, feed carefully and work the depth until the shoal shows itself.
  • It’s a popular winter match stretch, so expect established swims and plenty of interest when the river is in nick. Fishing platforms are present along the venue.
  • Access is through the gate at the end of the car park, then down the stone track to the river. Disabled access is listed as limited, so allow for a bit of uneven going.
  • Parking is available opposite the village church. There’s no on-site parking listed, and no toilet facilities are listed either, so sort the practical bits before heading down.
  • The stretch is on the right bank and is not listed as gated or locked. Night fishing is not allowed, keeping this one firmly in the daylight match-and-winter-roach bracket.

Methods: For winter, fish a long-rod float or slider with maggot, concentrating on the deeper water. In warmer conditions, try hemp and tares for roach around The Stones, and keep an eye on the bream water above the road bridge and by the railway bridge.

Coarse fishing on English rivers is closed from 15 March to 15 June inclusive. That's the law for coarse fish on rivers — it's not a club rule, and game-fishing seasons work differently.
