The lowdown
- This is one of Nottingham Piscatorial Society’s three navigable River Trent fisheries. A proper river stretch, with boat traffic to bear in mind during the summer months.
- The water holds specimen barbel, plus chub, pike, carp, roach, perch and dace. Plenty there to keep things interesting.
- NPS says the Fiskerton and Rolleston day-ticket fisheries provide over two miles of coarse fishing between them. The exact length of Fiskerton itself isn’t given.
- Swims suit a fair spread of tactics, from a tidy stick float approach through to heavy swimfeeder work. Pick the gear to match the flow.
- For barbel, a feeder set-up is the obvious line when the river’s pushing. Keep an eye on the crease and any steadier water alongside the main flow.
- Float anglers aren’t left out either. Stick float fishing is specifically listed as suitable, so trotting is well worth considering where the pace allows.
- Summer brings boat traffic, so timing and swim choice matter. Winter is quieter, with kingfishers along the banks — a cracking time for a calmer session.
- The fishery can sometimes close for matches. Check the NPS calendar before booking, otherwise you could have a proper faff on your hands.
- Specimen fish, especially barbel, should be rested in the water before release. Remove all litter from your peg and leave the place bob on.
- Access is via recognised footpaths only. The car-park What3Words location is apples.dares.goodbye; don’t drive over surrounding land or block farm vehicles, lanes or gates.
Methods: The stretch covers both ends of the river approach: stick float for working the flow and heavy swimfeeder for targeting barbel and other coarse fish. Adjust around boat traffic in summer and the quieter winter conditions.

Coarse fishing on English rivers is closed from 15 March to 15 June inclusive. That's the law for coarse fish on rivers — it's not a club rule, and game-fishing seasons work differently.
