We don't publish an "ideal level" — nobody can promise one. Flood water is dangerous: if it's up and coloured, stay well back from the edge. Open River Ready
The lowdown
- This is a meadow-lined coarse-fishing venue in the Somerton village area of Oxfordshire, with the river winding through open farmland.
- Access is centred around the bridges. Park in the lay-by by the bridge as you enter Somerton, keeping things tidy and considerate.
- Downstream from the road bridge, two large meadows are fishable on the left bank. Plenty of room to explore rather than being tied to numbered pegs.
- Upstream from the Iron Bridge, there is one fishable meadow on the left bank and another on the right. So, overall, both banks feature in the venue.
- There is no formal peg count or measured length listed. It is meadow-bank fishing, with swims picked out on the ground rather than a row of marked pegs.
- The stretch has produced roach, dace, bream, chub, perch, pike and barbel. That is a handy mix of classic Cherwell coarse species.
- The association river season runs from 16 June to 14 March. Pike fishing is specifically allowed from 1 October to 14 March on association waters.
- Keep the approach sensible and low-fuss: rod, pole and line only. One rod is the normal limit, with a second rod allowed for pike fishing using live or dead bait.
- Look after the place. No dogs or guns, and anglers must not damage banks, fences, crops or gates. Clear litter within 5 metres of your fishing position.
Methods: The checked rules allow rod, pole and line fishing. One rod is normally permitted; a second rod is allowed for pike fishing only, using live or dead bait.
