We don't publish an "ideal level" — nobody can promise one. Flood water is dangerous: if it's up and coloured, stay well back from the edge. Open River Ready
The lowdown
- Access is through the same entrance as Slinket Lake. Use the main gate, then turn left once you’re in.
- The river gate is at the bottom of the field. Simple enough, but do shut every gate after you’ve opened it.
- Fishing begins one field below the road bridge, so the stretch has a clear starting point rather than a vague wander about.
- Downstream, the water continues to the corner before the straight section. The Cherwell then meets the Oxford Canal at the bottom end.
- The association describes this as a river fishery, with a cracking mix of named coarse species: roach, dace, chub, bream, perch, tench, pike, rudd and bleak.
- The surrounding valley around Aynho and Nell Bridge is rural and wooded. It should have a properly peaceful feel, with plenty of countryside around the fishing.
- There’s enough variety in the named fish to keep things interesting, from roach and dace through to chub, bream, perch and tench. Pike are on the list too, but only in their set season.
- For a light approach, trotting or a small feeder would suit the sort of mixed river fishery described here, while pike anglers can use a second rod with live or dead bait when permitted. Keep the tackle sensible and don’t overcomplicate it.
- The river season runs from 16 June to 14 March. Pike fishing is allowed from 1 October to 14 March, so check the calendar before heading off.
- There’s no leaving a mess behind: remove litter from within five metres of your fishing position. Dogs and guns aren’t permitted when fishing.
Methods: The named species make this a mixed-river venue suited to straightforward float or feeder fishing. Pike anglers can use a second rod with live or dead bait from 1 October to 14 March.
