River Thames — Eynsham Down

Eynsham Down gives you roughly 2 km of Thames fishing on Abingdon & Oxford Anglers Alliance water, with bream shoals and large chub the headline draw. There’s a proper mixed bag here too — just don’t bank on easy parking.

Run by Abingdon & Oxford Anglers Alliance · checked 3 Oct 2026

The lowdown

  • This is a roughly 2 km stretch, with fishing on the right-hand bank looking downstream. That’s the bank to get bob on before you start lugging your kit along the Thames.
  • Head for the towpath at the toll bridge, then walk downstream. Alliance water starts approximately 400 metres below the bridge, so don’t mistake the access point for the start of your fishing.
  • Parking at Eynsham is described as extremely limited. That’s a proper consideration for this trip, especially with the walk from the bridge before you even reach the Alliance water.
  • Bream shoals are one of the holder’s headline attractions here. If bream are your thing, that’s the standout detail — shoals are specifically highlighted for Eynsham, rather than just included in a general fish list.
  • Large chub get a mention alongside those bream. There are a few barbel too, but keep that wording in mind: this isn’t being billed as a stretch packed with them.
  • Roach, perch and pike are all named for this water, giving the stretch plenty of mixed-fish interest. Carp and tench have also been caught historically; treat those as past catches, not promises.
  • Sort your Alliance coarse permit before the session and have your official digital permit ready as proof of membership. This is membership water, with no confirmed public day-ticket option to fall back on.
  • Keep the session to daytime: the Alliance bans night fishing unless a special notice allows it, and none is stated here. Swims can’t be reserved either, so no saving a cheeky peg.

Methods: Bream shoals and large chub give you the clearest starting point for choosing your target here. Roach, perch and pike offer alternatives, while the holder describes barbel as present in small numbers.
