River Thames — Lower Whitley Farm
The lowdown
- This bit of the Thames sits west of Farmoor Reservoir, between the Alliance’s Bablock Hythe and Pinkhill stretches. Handy landmarks to get your bearings before sorting your kit and heading down to the river.
- Roach, bream and perch make up most of the match catches here. That’s the main steer for anyone fancying a mixed catch, rather than spending the whole session chasing one particular fish.
- Don’t overlook the near bank. The Alliance specifically points to cover close in as an opportunity for chub fishing, so those sheltered spots deserve attention when you’re choosing where to settle.
- Pike and perch offer another angle, with the holder flagging potential for specimen fish of both species. A cracking prospect if predators are your thing, though potential isn’t a promise of a big ’un.
- Farmoor complex car park 3 is the Alliance’s suggested convenient parking spot. It gives you a short walk to the downstream end, making it a useful starting point for getting onto this stretch.
- From car park 3, follow the zigzag footpath, cross the service road and carry on to the river. Keep that little route in mind and save yourself some unnecessary access faff.
- There’s alternative parking beside Lower Whitley Farm cottages, reached from Cumnor Road along a Thames Water private road. Space is limited to roughly two or three cars, so it’s a small option rather than a big car park.
- At the cottages, take the footpath on their right, not the Thames Water service road. Keep things quiet around the houses, especially early and late — the Alliance specifically asks anglers not to disturb residents.
Methods: Let the named fish guide your session: mixed fishing for roach, bream and perch, or a chub-focused approach around the near-bank cover. Pike and specimen perch are another option; the holder doesn’t specify particular rigs or tactics.

Coarse fishing on English rivers is closed from 15 March to 15 June inclusive. That's the law for coarse fish on rivers — it's not a club rule, and game-fishing seasons work differently.
