South Stoke East Bank (RDAA — ex LAA, from Jun 2024)

A proper classic middle-Thames stretch on the east bank, run and bailiffed by Reading & District Angling Association. It’s a rural, easy-walking bit of water with quality roach, big bream shoals, chub and pike in the mix.

We don't publish an "ideal level" — nobody can promise one. Flood water is dangerous: if it's up and coloured, stay well back from the edge. Open River Ready

The lowdown

  • The railway bridge marks the upstream boundary of this South Stoke East Bank section.
  • It’s part of RDAA’s shared South Stoke & Cholsey waters. The two banks together run for roughly 1.3 miles, though no separate South Stoke length is given.
  • Access is via the track at the end of Ferry Road, South Stoke — just beyond the Perch and Pike pub. Nice and straightforward.
  • Park on the right of the track before you reach the river. Don’t wing it; that’s the instruction for this water.
  • RDAA calls the South Stoke section an easy walk, so it’s a handy one for having a good wander and looking for the better-looking swims.
  • This is classic middle-Thames fishing, with the usual mix of river pace and quieter-looking water to pick apart.
  • Quality roach are specifically mentioned, while big shoals of bream are reported too. Proper float-fishing territory when conditions are kind.
  • Chub are present, and there are pike as well, so it isn’t just a silver-fish job. Keep an eye on the crease and any cover along the rural, tree-lined bank.
  • Trotting and feeder work are the obvious approaches from the description: go light for roach, then beef things up when the bream shoals move in.
  • The official page doesn’t set out a separate night-fishing rule, peg count or day-ticket price. Check the RDAA rules before fishing — no faff, and worth doing.
  • We're not sure on ticket prices for this one — check with the club or local regulations before you leave.

Methods: Trotting for the quality roach looks the bob-on starting point, with feeder tactics suited to the reported bream shoals. Keep a chub and pike option in mind as you explore the swims.

Key rules

  • Fishery rules must be checked on the RDAA website.
  • Park on the right of the track before reaching the river.

Coarse fishing on English rivers is closed from 15 March to 15 June inclusive. That's the law for coarse fish on rivers — it's not a club rule, and game-fishing seasons work differently.
