Buttington Bridge — BAA
Buttington Bridge is a proper upper-Severn stretch with a mix of deep holes and shallower water. BAA runs it, and there’s scope for both coarse and game fishing, with good pike water in the deeper bits.

We don't publish an "ideal level" — nobody can promise one. Flood water is dangerous: if it's up and coloured, stay well back from the edge. Open River Ready
The lowdown
- This is typical upper Severn — varied, natural-looking river water rather than a uniform canal-style stretch.
- Expect a bit of everything under the rod tip, with both deep and shallow areas to pick apart.
- The deeper holes are the main draw for pike. Worth concentrating your effort there, especially when the river has a bit of colour.
- Fly or bait are both allowed, so you can switch things up depending on conditions and what the river is doing.
- The BAA lists both game and coarse fishing here. A handy option if you fancy changing approach during the day.
- Salmon are taken above Buttington Bridge, but any salmon caught must go straight back under the stated Natural Resources Wales emergency byelaw.
- At Buttington Bridge, roadside parking is available. There’s extra parking behind the level crossing farther along the A458.
- Access is on foot via the paths to the river. There’s also access around the Powis Arms near Maginnis Bridge, where the BAA car park sits next to the bridge.
- A further option is the church near the Powis Arms, with track access from the church area down to the water.
- No night fishing here, so plan a proper daylight session. Carry your BAA membership card while fishing BAA water — bob on and no faff if checked.
- We're not sure on ticket prices for this one — check with the club or local regulations before you leave.
Methods: Keep it flexible: fly or bait are both available, with the deeper holes the obvious starting point for pike. For general river sport, work the varied depths and keep an eye on how the flow is pushing through the swim.

Coarse fishing on English rivers is closed from 15 March to 15 June inclusive. That's the law for coarse fish on rivers — it's not a club rule, and game-fishing seasons work differently.
