The lowdown
- The Llandinam access is via the stile below Llandinam Bridge. Nice and straightforward, provided you use the right route.
- Use Llandinam public car park as the recommended access point. Do not cut in from the field behind The Lion pub — that’s specifically out of bounds.
- CAA controls roughly seven miles of double-bank fishing on the Upper Severn, so there’s plenty of association water around this part of the river.
- If you’re fishing upstream from Llandinam, keep to the river-left bank. Bob on, and much less faff than wandering onto the wrong side.
- This is predominantly fly-only water. Expect clear-water fishing and productive fly hatches, including Grannom and Stone/Needle flies.
- The river is rain-fed, with flow sometimes boosted by compensation releases from Clywedog Reservoir. Keep an eye on conditions before wading.
- Trout are in season from 18 March to 7 October, with a two-fish daily limit and a minimum size of 9 inches/22.5 cm.
- Salmon fishing runs from 1 February to 7 October, but it’s fly and artificial-lure only. All salmon must go back up to 15 June.
- Grayling must always be returned alive. No keep nets, maggots or groundbaiting either, so keep things tidy and natural.
- CAA permits spinning and worm fishing downstream of Caersws village. The official rules also flag overhead power cables, and a flotation aid is advised when wading.
Methods: Fly fishing is the main game here, matching the Grannom and Stone/Needle hatches as conditions dictate. Downstream of Caersws village, spinning and worm fishing are also permitted.

Coarse fishing on English rivers is closed from 15 March to 15 June inclusive. That's the law for coarse fish on rivers — it's not a club rule, and game-fishing seasons work differently.
