River Severn — Emstrey
Emstrey gives you over 1.5 miles of the Severn’s right-hand bank, with deep, steady water and faster gravel runs to mix things up. It’s run by Shrewsbury Town Fisheries, but you’ll need an Emstrey-specific permit before heading down.

River Severn
River Severn — Emstrey
The lowdown
- There’s a proper mix of water here: deep, slow sections alongside fast gravel runs. That changing pace is the big feature of Emstrey, rather than one uniform bit of river from start to finish.
- The upper section is deep and wide. The upstream boundary starts in the first field above the A5 bridge, so that’s the landmark to keep in mind when getting your bearings.
- Below the farm, things change character. The river becomes shallower and faster here, giving this part of the stretch a different feel from the deeper water up above.
- Carry on towards the downstream end and the depth increases again. Think deep water, then a shallower, faster section, then deeper water again — a handy way to picture the stretch.
- The fishing follows the Severn Way southeast of Shrewsbury, covering over 1.5 miles of right-hand bank. There’s a fair bit of river here, with those changes in depth and pace along the way.
- The named coarse fish include barbel, bream, chub, perch, pike and roach, plus dace. Salmon are listed too, and salmon day tickets are offered alongside the coarse-fishing options.
- Sort your ticket online before setting off. None are sold on the bank, and a standard STF permit won’t do for Emstrey. Equally, your Emstrey ticket doesn’t cover the other STF fisheries.
- For parking, use the farm or the car park below Asset Surfacing — not Asset Surfacing itself. Keep to hedge lines on the walk down, lock the gate behind you, and remember there’s no night fishing.
Methods: The useful distinction here is between the deep, slow water and the shallower, faster gravel runs. No particular fishing methods are specified for the stretch.

Coarse fishing on English rivers is closed from 15 March to 15 June inclusive. That's the law for coarse fish on rivers — it's not a club rule, and game-fishing seasons work differently.
