River Severn — Monkmoor, Shrewsbury
The lowdown
- This isn’t one samey length of bank. Well over a mile of fishing takes in three distinct sections, with deep holes, rapids, gutters and slacks giving you plenty of different water to weigh up.
- The upper section starts at the locally named Gypsy Stones. That’s your landmark for the top end, where the mix of bedrock rapids, pools and deep holes gives the stretch its punchy character.
- There are eddies up here too, so it’s not all rushing water. Take a moment to pick out the different features rather than treating every swim as the same bit of Severn.
- The middle section is known as Uffington and sits between two road bridges. Slack margins, deep gutters and shallow gravel runs make this another varied bit of bank, not just a link between sections.
- Fancy a predator session? Pike and perch fishing gets a particular mention near the lower outlet. The lower section also adjoins Belvedere Wood fishery, a useful landmark when getting your bearings.
- The fishery names barbel, chub, dace, perch, pike, roach and salmon for Monkmoor. That’s a cracking spread of species, but make sure your permit covers the fishing you’re planning to do.
- Sort the gate combination before setting off and keep it to yourself. Parking is on the hardstanding beneath the two road bridges; the published fishery postcode is SY2 5TL.
- Watch your footing: the high banks can be dangerous when wet or muddy. This is daylight-only fishing too, so leave before dark rather than squeezing in a cheeky extra spell.
Methods: Let the features guide your swim choice: the upper pools and eddies offer a different proposition from Uffington’s shallow gravel runs and deep gutters. For a predator session, the lower outlet is the area highlighted for pike and perch.
