River Severn — Knowle Sands

Knowle Sands is BAA’s four-section stretch of the Shropshire Severn, with barbel firmly on the agenda. Summer and autumn get the nod, with swimfeeder or leger fishing the recommended approach — just pack light for that woodland climb.

The lowdown

  • There are four numbered sections here, so sort out which bit you’re heading for before unloading the car. Sections 1 and 2 have a different approach from sections 3 and 4.
  • Barbel are the fish BAA specifically names for Knowle Sands. That gives you a clear starting point for the session, without needing to turn the bait bag into a tackle-shop shelf.
  • Summer and autumn are BAA’s picks for the best fishing here. If you’re choosing when to give Knowle Sands a go, those are the seasons to pencil into the diary.
  • Keep the approach straightforward: swimfeeder and leger fishing are the recommended methods. Pellets, corn and meat are the suggested barbel baits, so there’s a handy shortlist when you’re packing for the bank.
  • For sections 1 and 2, use the BAA car park through the gate just past the Swan Inn landmark. Have your membership card handy — that’s where you’ll find the gate code.
  • From that car park, it’s a long downhill walk through woodland and across a field. The woodland climb back is steep, so BAA’s advice to travel light is well worth heeding.
  • Sections 3 and 4 are approached along a lane in Eardington, with parking near the sewage works. The downstream car park entrance postcode is WV16 5LF — handy for sorting your route.
  • Fancy a session after dark? Knowle Sands is a listed night-permit venue, but it needs planning rather than a cheeky last-minute extension. Members must buy the permit from BAA headquarters in advance.

Methods: Swimfeeder and leger fishing are BAA’s recommended methods here. For barbel, pellets, corn and meat make up the suggested bait shortlist — nice and straightforward.
