Kempsey — River Severn

Kempsey is a cracking lower-Severn stretch run by Kinver Freeliners Angling Club. It’s deeper and steadier than the middle Severn, with barbel, bream, zander and a good spread of silver fish to keep things interesting.

We don't publish an "ideal level" — nobody can promise one. Flood water is dangerous: if it's up and coloured, stay well back from the edge. Open River Ready

The lowdown

  • You get approximately 900 yards of fishable water here, described by KFAC as a scenic lower-Severn fishery. Properly nice-looking stuff, by the sound of it.
  • The river is deeper and slower than the middle Severn reaches. That steady flow makes it well suited to float fishing, with trotting a sensible way to search the water.
  • Barbel are the principal target. The club has recorded fish over 14 lb, so there’s a decent chance of something with a bit of shoulder on the right gear.
  • Bream shoals are present, giving you another option when the barbel aren’t playing ball. Zander are in too, including the club record at 19 lb.
  • Dace, chub and roach round out the species list. There’s enough variety here for a proper all-round session rather than just sitting it out for one bite.
  • The banks are steep, so getting in and out of the swims needs a bit of care. KFAC advises carrying a dog spike and knotted rope — not exactly optional faff on this venue.
  • Night fishing is allowed, but it’s tightly timed. You can’t arrive before 05:00 and must be away by 23:00, so plan the session around those hours.
  • Parking changes with conditions. In dry weather, use the first meadow for the southerly original section and stay within the signs; in wet weather, park by the container.
  • For the newer northerly section, vehicles may use the bank in dry weather only as directed by KFAC. Keep vehicles at field edges and don’t cross the field before the coloured post or hay harvest.
  • We're not sure on ticket prices for this one — check with the club or local regulations before you leave.

Methods: Float fishing should be bob on in the deeper, steady flow, with trotting worth a go for the dace, chub and roach. For barbel, bream and zander, choose a suitable feeder or leger approach and work the deeper water.
