The full rundown on Crinan Canal

Crinan Canal is a cracking bit of water in Argyll and Bute, running approximately 9 miles between Ardrishaig and Crinan. It’s a canal rather than a conventional commercial lake, so expect towpaths, locks, moving waterway traffic and a more open, exploratory style of fishing.

There are 15 locks along the canal, but the best areas are reported toward the Crinan end, particularly between locks 9 and 13. That gives you a useful starting point rather than blindly wandering the full length with a fly rod and a brew going cold.

The official target species is brown trout, and Scottish Canals describe the canal as holding good trout. The feeder reservoirs include both stocked and wild-fish waters, although those waters form part of the canal’s supply system rather than being presented as standard day-ticket lakes.

Fly fishing only is permitted on the canal fishery. That makes the approach pretty clear: keep mobile, watch the water, and be ready to cover likely trout water as conditions change. Dusk is reported to fish especially well, while night fishing is also specifically mentioned as potentially productive.

This isn’t a venue for rolling up with a load of carp kit, clipping up and settling in for a bite alarm session. It’s more about reading the canal, casting safely and making the most of the light. Take particular care around other people on the bank and on the water, with overhanging branches and overhead cables flagged as casting hazards.

Permits are available through Fyne Tackle, with a £10 day ticket, £20 three-day ticket or £30 one-week ticket. Bag limits should be checked when booking or obtaining the permit. Fishing for non-migratory freshwater fish generally doesn’t require a licence, but a permit is required in some circumstances, particularly for the reservoir waters.

Opening is seasonal. The 2026 canal operating season ran from 1 May to 2 October 2026, with summer operating hours of 08:30-17:00, seven days a week. From 5 October 2026, canal transit and basin operations were by request and pre-scheduled on Mondays or Fridays, with normal weekend operations closed during winter. Check the current arrangements before setting off.
