We don't publish an "ideal level" — nobody can promise one. Flood water is dangerous: if it's up and coloured, stay well back from the edge. Open River Ready
The lowdown
- The water starts straight below Stafford Bridge, so there’s a proper mix of river character rather than one steady pace all the way through.
- The upstream section has faster water. Handy territory for working the crease, trotting through likely lines or looking for chub tucked into the flow.
- Further down, the river meanders through a wooded section. Expect a more enclosed feel and plenty of variation from swim to swim.
- At the downstream end things slow up and deepen. That should suit a more patient approach, especially when the river is carrying a bit of colour.
- The club describes the bankside access as mostly straightforward, so getting settled into a swim should not be a massive faff.
- There’s roughly a 290-metre walk from the parking area to the river. Worth factoring in when packing the barrow or hauling a feeder setup.
- It’s a coarse fishery with the usual Great Ouse line-up mentioned for the stretch, including chub, roach, dace, perch and pike.
- Large chub featured in good catches during the 2021–2022 season, giving the faster water a proper bit of interest.
- The stretch is varied rather than uniform. Have a wander first, then pick between the quicker upper water, wooded middle or deeper lower end.
- Parking and access requirements matter here. Follow the club’s arrangements to keep things sweet with the landowners.
- We're not sure on ticket prices for this one — check with the club or local regulations before you leave.
Methods: Trotting and feeder work look the natural starting points, with chub and roach in the quicker water and a more patient approach worth trying in the slower, deeper end. Lure or deadbait tactics may appeal where pike are present, subject to the club’s rules.
