The full rundown on Fenland Fisheries

Fenland Fisheries gives you three very different ways to wet a line around Earith. Willow is the serious overnight specimen carp option. Vermuyden is the group-friendly carp water, with cabins and bivvy spaces. Then there’s Ash Tree, a small day-ticket lake aimed squarely at float and pole fishing. Handy, really, if your idea of a proper session changes with the weather, company or target fish.

Willow is a former gravel pit that’s been run as a specimen carp fishery since 1992. It’s limited to a maximum of seven anglers, so the low head of anglers is a big part of the appeal. This is booked overnight fishing, with anglers and guests needing to be aged 18 or over. You’ll need to plan ahead, pack properly and be ready for a more focused carp session rather than a quick chuck.

The price on Willow is £35 per night from 1 March to 31 October, or £25 per night from 1 November to 28 February. Carp can’t be sacked or retained, rods mustn’t be left unattended and anglers need to stay within 15 metres of them. So it’s very much a stay-alert, look-after-the-fish setup. Before travelling, it’s worth checking the booking details and asking what the current preferred approach is for bait, rigs and swim choice.

Vermuyden has a different feel. It’s a compact former gravel pit with over 200 carp, including fish over 40lb, and most carp are reported to exceed 15lb. Advance booking is required, including for night sessions. There are three insulated fishing cabins with heating, USB ports, a kettle, toaster, microwave and fridge, plus bookable bivvy spaces if you’d rather keep things more traditional.

Groups can also book Vermuyden exclusively, which makes it a cracking shout for a planned carp break with your mates. Bring the usual overnight kit, but make the most of the cabins if you’ve booked one — a brew-making setup and a bit of warmth can be proper welcome during a long session. As with any new carp water, ask about the best way to fish your booked swim, how bait should be introduced and whether there are any current restrictions beyond the published rules.

Ash Tree is the simpler option at Fenland Fisheries. It has 11 swims on approximately three quarters of an acre and is designed for float or pole fishing. No advance booking is needed, and it costs £10 per day, payable on the bank. Gates are open from 7:00am BST until 7:00pm BST, making it a straightforward day out without the faff of organising an overnight session.

Whichever lake you choose, all waters require an Environment Agency rod licence on request, a designated swim and dry fish-care equipment. Barbless or micro-barbed hooks only. Fires, dogs and litter are prohibited, while braided main line, leadcore, peanuts and tiger nuts aren’t allowed anywhere on the fishery. Check the venue’s current instructions before setting off, bring the right kit and you’ll be nicely sorted for a bob-on session.
