River Great Ouse
New Cut, Offord Cluny
The lowdown
- This is a quiet little overflow channel, rather than a full-on river stretch. It was built to carry water during pumping-station maintenance, but the overflow is no longer used.
- The water runs from Grafham Pumping Station to the Overfalls Weir Pool. The New Cut itself is reached after passing the Black Overfalls Weir Pool.
- It’s a shallow backwater with no flow, so expect still-water tactics rather than proper river work. Keep an eye on the margins and any deeper-looking bits.
- Tench are the main named target here. A gentle approach and a bit of patience should suit the character of the place.
- Winter is the time for pike. OBAS reports 15 pike to 24 lb caught on the fly near the Black Overfalls Weir Pool, which is a proper bit of form.
- Access starts at the OBAS Main Car Park off Station Lane, Offord Cluny. The postcode given is PE19 5RX.
- There’s a 6 ft 4 in (1.9 m) height restriction at the car-park entrance, and the barrier is secured with a combination padlock.
- Members get the barrier combination from the members handbook. From the car park, follow the road towards the Old Flour Mill, cross the Mill Stream bridge and enter the field through the gate.
- Carry on along the Ouse Valley Way. New Cut is on the left after the Black Overfalls Weir Pool when walking from the main car park.
- It’s one swim at a time, maximum three rods, and a suitable landing net is compulsory. Pike anglers need wire traces, while large fish must go on an unhooking mat.
- We're not sure on ticket prices for this one — check with the club or local regulations before you leave.
Methods: Keep it simple and tidy: patient tench tactics suit the shallow, still water, while winter pike are the headline option around the nearby weir-pool area. Pike gear must include a wire trace.
