The full rundown on Digger Lakes

Digger Lakes sits at Verbeer Manor near Willand, just outside Cullompton in Devon. There are two lakes on the venue: Snails Lake and Persey’s Pool. Both are aimed at carp anglers, whether you fancy a relaxed session or you’re after a proper lump.

Snails Lake is the bigger of the two at approximately 5 acres, with around 17 swims. The fishery normally books no more than roughly 12–13 anglers onto it at once, so it’s not rammed peg-to-peg. The lake contains more than 200 carp according to published venue descriptions, including fish above 30lb and historical reports of carp over 40lb.

Persey’s Pool covers approximately 3.8–4 acres and was created around 2011. It has about 10 double swims, with roughly nine swims booked at a time. The lake has been described as holding around 140 carp, ranging from double figures to approximately 30lb.

The main targets are common and mirror carp. Anglers book a place on the lake rather than a specific swim, so there’s no reserving a favourite corner or cheeky bit of margin by putting a bucket down. You pick from what’s available on arrival.

Day and night fishing are available, and the venue is reported as open throughout the year subject to booking availability. Tickets must be booked and paid for online through the fishery website, rather than by phone. Published ticket information has listed 12-hour tickets from approximately £10–£14, with a guide of £11 for two rods and £14 for three rods, but check the current calendar before travelling.

The rules are very much set up around looking after the carp. You’ll need a large unhooking mat, a minimum 42-inch landing net and at least 12lb mono. Barbed or micro-barbed hooks are required, fixed leads and bait boats are banned, and fish must go straight back. Keepnets and fish sacks aren’t allowed.

Facilities are useful for a longer stint, with toilets, showers, a changing room and fresh drinking water on site. Showers are reported at £2, and fishery pellets are available from an automated dispenser at approximately £2 per kilo. A cracking option if you want a straightforward Devon carp session with a chance of a decent fish.
