The full rundown on Milemead Fisheries

Milemead Fisheries at Mill Hill, Tavistock, Devon, PL19 8NP gives you a proper choice of sessions without having to choose a different venue. There are five lakes across the 22-acre site, ranging from a half-acre mixed water to dedicated carp and catfish options. The useful bit is that they genuinely offer different things. A float session, a two-rod carp day and an exclusive overnight booking aren't all squeezed into the same setup here.

For straightforward day-ticket fishing, start with Lakes 1 and 2. Carp & Silvers has two acres and 25 pegs, with common, mirror and ghost carp listed to over 20lb alongside roach, crucians, bream, rudd and tench. That's the mixed-water choice if you want silvers on the agenda but still fancy the possibility of a lump. You don't need to book ahead, and there's a 24-hour ticket option too, though overnight fishing needs pre-booking.

Canal & Basin is the smaller, float-only alternative. Its half-acre layout has 18 pegs, including several wheelchair-friendly swims beside the car park. Carp are listed to 5lb and tench to 2lb, with crucians, roach, rudd, bream and gudgeon adding variety. If your idea of a cracking day is watching a float rather than setting out a specimen spread, this is the obvious fit. Keepnets are permitted here, but fish retention is limited to six hours.

Step over to Cat & Carp and the emphasis changes. Lake 3 has 12 pegs across two acres, with no more than ten anglers, and lists Wels catfish to 40lb and carp to 30lb. Twenty-four-hour bookings take priority; midweek day tickets may be available during quieter months. Specimen Carp, Lake 4, keeps numbers tighter still: seven pegs but a maximum of five anglers. The fishery lists approximately 120 carp and a lake record of 34lb 15oz.

Boat Lake is the exclusive-booking option, with one acre and three pegs. Its published stock includes carp to 30lb and Wels catfish to 71lb, so this isn't simply another little mixed pond. Get the tackle requirements straight before packing: Lake 5 requires at least 20lb line and allows six rods in total, despite a three-rod individual limit. Lake 4 has its own minimum 15lb line requirement and specifies microbarbed hooks. Different lakes, different kit checks.

The practical side is fairly clear. Lakes 1 and 2 are walk-up waters, while Lakes 3–5 need a telephone booking with the fishery. Normal fishing runs from 7am until dusk. The tackle shop opens at 9am, so early arrivals on Lakes 1 and 2 need to head back then for tickets. Evening tickets on those two lakes begin earlier in winter than summer. Sort the right ticket and lake first, and there's less faff when you arrive.
