Pressham Wood

Pressham Wood is a cracking 350-metre Dorset Stour stretch near Durweston, run by Blandford & District Angling Club. It’s deep, sheltered and fishes from the true right bank only, with the water running down to the weir.

Run by Blandford & District Angling Club · checked 6 Oct 2026

The lowdown

  • This is a proper deep-water job, averaging around 12 feet. Worth taking a bit of time to plumb up before chucking the first feeder in.
  • The stretch starts at the top of the path in the woods north of Durweston and runs downstream to the weir. Bob on, but don’t wander above it — the club doesn’t hold those rights.
  • Fishing is from the true right bank only. The wooded setting gives plenty of shelter from the sun, which is handy on brighter days and gives the swim a nice tucked-away feel.
  • Roach, dace, perch, chub, bream and pike are among the fish named for the water. There’s enough variety to keep things interesting, whether you fancy a float or a proper chuck.
  • Trotting should be worth a look where the flow allows, especially for roach, dace and perch. In the deeper swims, a feeder approach gives you a better chance of finding the fish.
  • Chub are also present, so keep an eye on crease lines, steadier margins and any cover close to the bank. A cheeky bait placed tight to features can pay.
  • The deep water and shelter should make this an attractive option when the river has a bit of colour. Coarse fishing runs from 16 June to 14 March inclusive.
  • Access is through the gate, with parking at the north end of Durweston opposite Norton Lane. Grass-verge parking and the lay-by are available, but don’t block roads, fields or property access. Close every gate, too — livestock and farm machinery share the surrounding land.

Methods: Try trotting where the flow is comfortable, or use a feeder to search the deeper water. For chub, work baits tight to cover and the crease, while lighter float tackle should suit the roach, dace and perch.
