The full rundown on A12 Cuton Lakes

A12 Cuton Lakes, officially A12 Lakes, is a three-water complex near Chelmsford with a proper mix of fishing. There are two specimen lakes aimed at carp anglers, plus the Canal Lake for mixed coarse and match fishing. So whether you fancy chasing a lump, bagging a few bites or getting involved in a match, there’s a fair bit of choice here.

Specimen 1 is the headline water for bigger carp. It covers approximately 5.8 acres and averages around 5–8 feet deep, giving you a decent-sized lake to get your head around. The fishery lists over 200 carp in the 18–30 lb range, along with three known carp over 40 lb. The official home page also describes over 300 mirror and common carp from 15–40 lb, so there are some proper targets in the mix.

That’s the lake for anglers happy to put the time in and pick apart a new swim. Have a good look at the margins, any visible features and signs of fish before chucking straight out. With a water of this size, don’t rush the first few hours. Get settled, watch the lake and ask the fishery team what areas have been producing before you get clipped up.

Specimen 2 is the more compact carp option, covering approximately 2.9 acres and averaging around 5–8 feet. It holds mirror and common carp, plus tench and bream, with over 250 carp listed from 8–34 lb. That gives you a broad target range, whether you fancy regular action from smaller carp or want to angle for one of the better fish. It’s also the option without the annual membership requirement attached to Specimen 1.

The Canal Lake is approximately 115 metres long and 16 metres wide, with 11 swims. It doubles as the match lake and has a more mixed stocking, including carp to 7 lb, tench to 6 lb, bream to 9 lb, perch to 3.8 lb and roach to 1.4 lb. Half-day, full-day and longer bookings are available, with the half-day session starting at 1pm. Open matches run with a Golden Peg, and club or group matches are available for 5–11 anglers.

Night fishing is available by advance booking and is subject to the fishery’s terms. Overnight fishing has a minimum charge of 24 hours, and it’s only allowed when no match is booked for the following day. Summer gate hours are 7:30am–6:00pm from 1 April to 31 October, while winter hours are 7:30am–4:30pm from 1 November to 31 March. Overnight anglers are locked in until morning, with a £20 gate-opening charge if they need to leave after closing, so get the booking details nailed down before setting off.
