The full rundown on Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation

The Chelmer & Blackwater Navigation is a proper linear canal venue near Maldon, running for roughly 14 miles from Chelmsford to Heybridge Basin. This isn’t a tidy little lake complex with numbered pegs. It’s a towpath and public-access bank fishery, with canal sections, backwaters, moorings and navigation features all thrown into the mix. Proper wandering-about fishing, then, with plenty to look at before you even unpack the gear.

The Maldon-area stretch runs from Brown’s Wharf towards Heybridge Basin, and much of the towpath and backwaters is available for coarse fishing. That said, this is an active navigation, so some areas are restricted around locks, bridges, wharves, landing stages, permanent moorings and other structures. No fishing within 30 metres of a lock, or within 15 metres of those other navigation features. Have a good look at the rules before settling into a swim, rather than getting caught out after the rods are out.

There’s a decent spread of fish to aim for. Roach are present, while bream have been reported to 10 lb or more and tench to 8 lb or more. Chub around 5 lb and perch around 4 lb add a bit of variety, with dace, barbel, rudd, gudgeon, ruffe and minnows also reported. On a new canal venue, it pays to keep things flexible: bring kit for a few different approaches, watch the water, and don’t be afraid to move if a swim looks quiet.

There’s proper lump potential as well. Pike over 20 lb and carp over 30 lb have been reported, so the Navigation can appeal to specimen hunters as well as anglers after a mixed bag. The canal format means margins, backwaters and quieter pegs are all worth considering, but exact features and fish location can change along a 14-mile stretch. A quick word with the bailiff or River Warden about productive areas, current conditions and any local restrictions could save a fair bit of faffing.

Night fishing is allowed, with no separate night-fishing permit required for the Navigation according to Maldon Angling Society information. Outside the closed season, which runs from 15 March to 16 June inclusive, the Navigation ticket has no stated time restriction. The fishing is catch-and-release, and carp and pike anglers must use an unhooking mat. Bring a suitably sized landing net, too. Carp sacks are prohibited, and carp over 5 lb must not be retained except during officially booked matches.

A Navigation day ticket costs £10, while the official Essex Waterways annual angling licence is £75. An Environment Agency rod licence is also required. Tickets are available online, from the Navigation Office at Paper Mill Lock, from River Wardens, and sometimes on the bank from Essex Waterways bailiffs; Maldon Angling Society states bank sales are cash only. Carry photographic identification and proof of licence, keep the swim spotless, and remember that no fires are allowed on the banks. Get the paperwork sorted, pack tidy fish-care kit and you’re bob on for a proper canal session.
