Clavering Lakes
Clavering Lakes near Saffron Walden gives you four properly different options: specimen carp, a dedicated Carp Lake, predators and mixed coarse fishing. Book ahead, pack for your chosen lake’s rules and don’t confuse overnight fishing with round-the-clock gate access.
“7.7/10 — Dedicated carp and predator lakes plus mixed coarse fishing offer strong target choices, although advertised best weights don’t establish catch rates.”

The full rundown on Clavering Lakes
Clavering Lakes is on Mill Lane, Clavering, near Saffron Walden in Essex, CB11 4RL. There are four lakes here, and choosing the right one is the first bit of homework worth doing. Specimen, Carp, Predator and Match each have their own line-up and tackle requirements. That makes this more than a straight carp venue, whether you fancy settling in for a longer session or keeping things mixed.
The Specimen Lake is the obvious starting point for a carp-focused stay: three acres, ten pegs and an advertised best of 37lb. The separate Carp Lake has ten pegs across two acres, with an advertised best of 28lb. Those are the fishery’s headline claims, not a promise of a PB. Both lakes require minimum 12lb line, a 42-inch landing net and micro-barbed hooks, so get that kit bob on before leaving home.
Fancy a different sort of pull? Predator Lake holds catfish, pike and perch across 1.5 acres, with eight pegs and an advertised headline of 85lb+. Don’t read that as a weight for every species, though. This isn’t somewhere to turn up with a lure rod for a cheeky wander: lures and fish livebaits are prohibited. Pike fishing runs from 1 October to 14 March, and sea deadbaits are only permitted during that season, with wire traces.
Match Lake is the mixed-coarse option, with carp, tench, bream, perch and silvers in two acres. Its eighteen pegs include two accessible swims, which is useful to know when weighing up where to book. Barbless hooks are required, and carp and silverfish need separate keepnets. It’s the clearest fit here for anyone who wants several species in the mix rather than making the whole trip about one big carp.
All fishing needs booking in advance through the Catch link on the official website. Your confirmation email is your ticket, either printed or on your phone. Booking doesn’t bag you a particular peg: swims are first come, first served, and putting a bucket down to reserve one isn’t allowed. There’s one angler per swim, no double swims and a maximum of two rods each. Overnight tickets are available, but gate access still has fixed hours.
The practical side is straightforward: three car parks, toilets and a freshwater tap outside the lodge. You can’t park behind your swim, and there’s no food service or takeaway delivery, so bring your grub. Gas stoves are allowed; barbecues and campfires aren’t. Dogs can come if kept under control and cleaned up after. One final navigation wrinkle: the mapped coordinates mark the lakeside lodge, not the entrance. Use the Mill Lane address when planning your arrival rather than assuming the map pin is the gate.

Can I park beside my peg?
No parking behind swims. There are three car parks, plus on-site toilets and a freshwater tap outside the lodge.

Yes — anyone 13 or over fishing in England and Wales needs an Environment Agency rod licence (or Natural Resources Wales in Wales), on top of your fishery ticket.

Worm or small lure for the perch
Perch hang round cover, boats and drop-offs. A lobworm on a light float, or a small lure worked along the features, will find them.
- Fish lobworm under a float tight to cover.
- On lures, try a small drop shot or soft shad near features.
- Feed chopped worm to keep them in the swim.
Good background reading. Most of it is a few years old, so treat it as a starting point and ask on the day.

What anglers reckon
7.7/10 from Tackle Index: Dedicated carp and predator lakes plus mixed coarse fishing offer strong target choices, although advertised best weights don’t establish catch rates.

Our take on the feedback
Our read
Checked Sept '26 — “Clavering Lakes near Saffron Walden gives you four properly different options: specimen carp, a dedicated Carp Lake, predators and mixed coarse fishing. Book ahead, pack for your chosen lake’s rules and don’t confuse overnight fishing with round-the-clock gate access.”
This is our own summary of recurring public feedback and the venue details we checked, not a copied customer review or a promise you’ll catch. Feedback changes, so we keep it separate from the Tackle Index score.
