The full rundown on Leeds and Liverpool Canal – Wigan Stretch

The Leeds and Liverpool Canal – Wigan Stretch is a proper historic canal run, stretching from Johnson’s Hill Locks at Whittle-le-Woods through to Saracen’s Head at Halsall. It’s controlled by Wigan District Angling Association, so this is WDAA water rather than a casual day-ticket wander. A long stretch like this gives you plenty to think about before you even get the tackle out.

The official description calls it good mixed fishing, with bream, carp, perch, pike, roach, rudd and tench listed. That’s a cracking spread of species. You can keep things light and tidy for smaller silverfish, or bring beefier gear when carp or pike are the target. The right approach will depend on the season, the peg and what the canal is doing on the day.

As with any canal, take a few minutes to read the swim before clipping up. Check the near margin, far bank, any cover and the depth changes you can find. A simple float or feeder approach can be a good starting point, with small amounts of bait rather than piling it in straight away. Groundbait and particles must be used moderately, so keep it controlled and build the swim carefully.

This is generally members-only water under WDAA control. Day tickets are not listed on the official canal page, and a practice-opportunity listing states that day tickets aren’t available on Wigan AA Leeds and Liverpool Canal stretches. In other words, sort your membership before you set off. The 2026 WDAA cards are on sale and run from 1 January to 31 December, whatever date you buy one. The fee table isn’t shown in the accessible membership information, so check the current price with WDAA first.

Fishing is listed as Monday to Sunday, sunrise to sunset. There’s no fixed annual close season listed on the official water page, but night fishing is a different matter. It isn’t allowed under the general rules unless you hold an applicable Night Card or syndicate membership, and then only on waters specifically shown on your membership card. A valid Environment Agency rod licence is also required in England.

Keep the kit sensible and the bank tidy. Two rods maximum, never leave them unattended, and take every bit of rubbish home. Fires, food tins, nuts and alcohol are prohibited under the general rules, while radios can only be used with headphones. Inline swimfeeders are required, apart from the Guru Xsafe system, and braided hooklengths and leadcore are not allowed. Fish must not be removed from the water or moved between Wigan AA waters without committee permission. Check the rules with WDAA before fishing, then pick a swim, start steady and let the canal tell you what it wants.
