River Wye – Belmont City North Bank

A proper city-centre Wye option: Belmont City North Bank is H&DAA’s famous match stretch, with a deep, steady run and plenty of named coarse-fish targets. Winter pegs can be busy, so an early start is worth the faff.

Run by Hereford & District Angling Association · checked 3 Oct 2026 · boundaries only partly described by the club

The lowdown

  • This is Belmont City North Bank, not the association’s separate City South Bank water. Keep that distinction in mind when planning your day: you’re looking at north-bank fishing in Hereford city centre, run by Hereford & District Angling Association.
  • The big feature is a deep, steady run. That’s the character to build your approach around, rather than expecting a shallow, racing swim. Getting your presentation settled at the right depth would be a sensible starting point.
  • There’s proper match-fishing pedigree here: the association calls it a famous match stretch. Roach, dace, bleak, perch and chublets are all named targets, giving the angler who enjoys fishing for bites a cracking mix to think about.
  • It isn’t just about the smaller fish, either. Pike, barbel and specimen carp are also reported present. That adds a different angle to the stretch, though their presence isn’t a promise of a big-fish day.
  • Winter is the time to get your arrival bob on. The holder specifically warns that pegs can be busy and recommends arriving early. Don’t leave buying your ticket until you reach the bank, though — they aren’t sold there.
  • Expect an urban setting, with tarmac paths and parking near the river. Hereford Rowing Club has the listed pay-and-display car park, postcode HR4 0BE, reached along Greyfriars Avenue from Barton Road.
  • Swim choice comes with a clear boundary: Belmont fishing must be from permanent pegs, and available platforms must be used. Pick your peg within those arrangements rather than making a cheeky new spot along the bank.
  • Check the calendar before loading up. Coarse fishing runs June 16–March 14, subject to additional closures; upstream of Old Wye Bridge, Belmont day tickets are unavailable on Sundays from September 1 to March 15.

Methods: For that deep, steady run, a carefully plumbed float approach or feeder would be sensible options to consider. Build your presentation around the depth and your chosen target rather than treating the whole stretch as one swim.

  • Maximum two rods; never leave rods unattended.
  • Return all fish: the association operates a zero-kill policy.
  • Braided hooklinks are prohibited.
  • Day-ticket fishing is sunrise to sunset only; night fishing is restricted to adult members.
  • Coarse season is June 16–March 14, subject to additional closures. Belmont upstream of Old Wye Bridge has no Sunday day tickets from September 1 to March 15.
  • No fires, and take all litter away.

Coarse fishing on English rivers is closed from 15 March to 15 June inclusive. That's the law for coarse fish on rivers — it's not a club rule, and game-fishing seasons work differently.
