River Wye – Belmont – City South Bank

Belmont’s City South Bank is a well-known match stretch on the Wye, run by Hereford & District Angling Association. Deep, steady water, a proper mixed species list and a busy Hereford setting — this is urban river fishing, not a quiet countryside hideaway.

The lowdown

  • The main draw is that deep, steady run. That’s the character to keep in mind when choosing your approach here: a substantial bit of river water rather than a stretch described by shallow runs or fast riffles.
  • This is a well-known match-fishing stretch, so check the association’s match calendar before sorting your trip. Booked sections and closures matter; there’s no point getting your tackle together for water you can’t fish that day.
  • Expect a busy city-centre backdrop with tarmac paths. Belmont sits on the south bank in Hereford, so the setting is very much urban Wye — worth knowing if your ideal session means peace and solitude.
  • Fishing platforms are part of the setup, and you must use them wherever they’re available. Not every swim has one, though, so don’t assume every peg offers the same place to settle in.
  • Watch your footing on the clay banks. They can turn slippery when damp, particularly relevant at swims without platforms. Keep that in mind when choosing where to stand and how to get your gear into position.
  • Winter pegs can get busy, and the association recommends arriving early. There’s an important ticket catch too: Belmont day tickets aren’t available on Sundays from 1 September to 15 March.
  • Roach, perch, pike and chub are among the named targets, alongside bleak and dace. Barbel and specimen carp are also present, with bream, brown trout, eel, grayling and salmon adding to the listed mix.
  • For access, parking is available at the end of Charles Witts Avenue, then follow the path to the right. ASDA has a three-hour limit; Wye Street offers pay-and-display parking. Pick the option that fits your session.

Methods: For that deep, steady run, a feeder or a carefully plumbed float approach is worth considering for the listed coarse fish. Get the depth sorted first rather than guessing your way through the swim.

Coarse fishing on English rivers is closed from 15 March to 15 June inclusive. That's the law for coarse fish on rivers — it's not a club rule, and game-fishing seasons work differently.
