River Wye – Holme Lacy – Luggs Mouth to Lucksall
The lowdown
- This isn’t one long stretch of samey water. From Luggs Mouth to Lucksall, the pace changes properly, giving you a choice between shallow, lively sections and deeper, slower swims.
- Above the road bridge, shallow riffles sit alongside steadier runs. That’s the upstream character in a nutshell: moving water with a change of pace, rather than the slower caravan-field water.
- The main caravan-field section is deeper and slower. It’s a distinct change from the riffles above the bridge, so don’t expect every swim along this stretch to fish alike.
- Carry on towards the downstream end and the river gets shallow and fast again. There’s a proper contrast between this end and the deeper middle section, worth keeping in mind when choosing your water.
- Barbel and chub are the principal targets, but there’s plenty else named here. Roach, perch, bream, pike and brown trout are on the list, alongside dace, bleak, grayling, eel and salmon.
- Winter brings large shoals of dace to the caravan-park section. That’s a particularly useful seasonal detail for this water, and the section has also featured in the Wye Championships.
- Luggs Mouth offers spring salmon opportunities when conditions suit. That’s a separate option from the main barbel-and-chub draw; adult salmon day tickets are available through the association’s ticket outlets.
- Mind your footing: some banks are steep, and wet clay gets slippery. Upstream access involves crossing the bridge, then using a stile and concrete steps—worth knowing before lugging your tackle over.
Methods: Barbel and chub are the main focus, with faster shallow water and deeper, slower swims offering distinctly different options. Winter dace in the caravan-park section and spring salmon at Luggs Mouth are the named seasonal opportunities.
