The lowdown

The Lancaster Canal here isn't a lake complex with a reception and numbered pools. This is PAC's permit-controlled canal fishery, running from Preston's southern end to Hatlex Bridge 118 at Hest Bank, with the Glasson Branch included too. Think towpath swims and a choice of canal sections, rather than picking a lake beside a clubhouse. Getting the right stretch and permit sorted is the first job.

The full rundown on Lancaster Canal

The Lancaster Canal here isn't a lake complex with a reception and numbered pools. This is PAC's permit-controlled canal fishery, running from Preston's southern end to Hatlex Bridge 118 at Hest Bank, with the Glasson Branch included too. Think towpath swims and a choice of canal sections, rather than picking a lake beside a clubhouse. Getting the right stretch and permit sorted is the first job.

There's a proper mixed coarse-fishing line-up: roach, perch, bream, tench, carp and pike are all reported across the fishery. That gives it appeal beyond just one target species, whether silver fish or predators are your thing. Don't read that as a promise of lumps in every swim, though. There are no checked stock weights or section-by-section fish lists here, so keep expectations sensible rather than turning up with a guaranteed PB in mind.

For a first go, the day ticket is straightforward: it covers up to two rods and includes pike fishing. Buy it through Clubmate before you arrive, because bankside sales aren't available. Day-ticket sessions run from dawn to dusk. Annual permits last 12 months from issue, rather than ending on a fixed calendar date, which is handy if you're joining partway through the year and fancy making regular trips.

Annual membership has a few different routes, so give that bit a proper look before paying. There are adult, senior citizen and disabled coarse memberships, while junior canal membership is free. Existing adult PAC members get a discounted canal membership. For annual pike fishing, both PAC and canal membership are required; joint options cover that combination. Season permit holders can night fish, and annual holders may use four rods, subject to EA regulations.

The predator rules are worth having bob on before packing the gear. Livebait and deadbait fishing are restricted to 1 October–14 March. Lure and fly fishing have no closed season, but pike fishing must stop when the water reaches 18°C or above. Pike wire traces must be at least 30lb, deadbait traces at least 18 inches, and an unhooking mat is compulsory for both pike and perch. That's essential kit, not an optional extra.

Keep the practical side simple, too. Fishing is from the towpath only, with boatyards and marinas excluded, and your gear must leave the path passable. Accessible pegs depend on the stretch and towpath condition; there's no towpath toilet reported. The Haslam Park coordinates mark a photographed fishing spot, not a central reception. Carry your permit proof and appropriate EA rod licence, keep rods attended, take your litter home and leave the swim tidy.
