The full rundown on Holly Farm Fishery
Holly Farm Fishery sits on Willoughby Road at Ashby Magna, near Lutterworth. It’s a three-lake coarse venue, with Gils, Trotters and Moby giving you a choice of layouts rather than three copies of the same water. Carp feature across all three, alongside a mix of other coarse fish. That makes it worth a look if your idea of a cracking day isn’t just waiting for one big bite.
Gils is the obvious starting point for a pole session. It’s narrow and canal-style, with 40 pegs listed on the official lake page. The fish mix includes carp, crucians, F1s, tench, roach, rudd and perch, so there’s more here than carp alone. The layout is the main draw: if you enjoy working a pole rather than tackling a big expanse of open water, this is the lake to ask about first.
Trotters also has 40 pegs, with approximately 20 metres of water between the bank and island. That’s a useful bit of detail when thinking about your tackle and the sort of swim you fancy. Carp, tench, F1s, crucians and roach are listed, and the lake specifically advertises winter roach fishing. There’s a cold-weather option to consider, then, rather than treating Holly Farm as purely a summer carp outing.
Moby is the smaller named water, reported at approximately half an acre with a central island. A January 2025 listing gives it 15 fishable pegs. Its listed residents are carp, bream, roach, tench and large goldfish. That compact island layout gives it a different feel on paper from canal-style Gils. Don’t read the name as a promise of monster carp, though: there are no checked fish weights to hang a PB claim on.
The important bit before sorting your bait is that Gils and Trotters don’t have identical feeding rules. Gils permits only Holly Farm pellets and groundbait for feeding; Trotters permits any pellets and groundbait. Both allow any pellet as hook bait. Both also require barbless hooks and a landing net, with keepnets allowed only during matches. Get those lake-specific details straight and you’ll save yourself a proper bit of bank-side faff.
Off the bank, a main car park and accessible toilet are listed, plus a caravan park with 10 pitches, concrete bases, showers, water points and waste disposal. Handy if you’re thinking beyond a single day out. The published ticket and caravan prices are undated, and exact opening hours need checking. Night fishing needs a direct conversation too, because the published guidance conflicts. Call Paul or Julie with the fishery to pin down arrangements for your chosen lake.

Bait, rigs & seasons
How we'd fish Gils
carp
A neat lead-clip rig over a light scattering of bait
When you don't know the lake well yet, the simplest approach is the best start: a reliable bottom bait rig on a clean spot, with just enough bait to get a bite without filling them up.
- Feel the lead down to find a firm spot, then clip up so you hit it every cast.
- Fish a single boilie or wafter with 20–30 freebies around it.
- Leave one rod roving and recast it to showing fish.
crucian
Delicate float for crucians
Crucian bites are tiny dips and lifts, so a sensitive float shotted right down is what catches them.
- Fish a small insert waggler or pole float over-depth by an inch.
- Corn, maggot or a 4mm pellet on a size 16–18.
- Strike at any small movement — crucians rarely bury the float.
tench
Lift method float for tench
Tench feed with their heads down and tip baits up — the lift method shows that bite as the float rising and lying flat.
- Fish the margin at dawn with a straight waggler, locked by a single big shot 2–3in from the hook.
- Rake or lightly bait the swim with hemp, corn and maggot.
- Strike when the float lifts or lies flat. Bread, corn or worm on a size 12–14.
roach
Float maggot for roach
On a mixed lake a waggler and a pint of maggots is the easiest way to keep the float going under all day.
- Feed six to ten maggots every cast.
- Shallow up if bites come on the drop.
- Size 18 hook and light hooklength.

How we'd fish Trotters
carp
Light baiting tight to the island margins
Carp patrol the island margins on most venues. A handful of bait right on the edge often beats a heavy bed in open water, especially later in the day.
- Walk the bank first and look for bubbling, swirls or coloured water by the cover.
- Bait two or three spots with a few handfuls of chopped and whole boilies.
- Lower or flick the rig in quietly and back your line off with a back lead.
- Keep the drag set tight-ish — fish hooked by cover need turning quickly.
tench
Lift method float for tench
Tench feed with their heads down and tip baits up — the lift method shows that bite as the float rising and lying flat.
