The full rundown on Sileby Fishery
Right, first things first: Sileby Fishery isn’t a set of boxed-off carp lakes. It’s a River Soar fishery, with the stretch running from the footbridge below Sileby weir downstream to the Waterside Inn at Mountsorrel. The water continues through to the Waterside pub section.
The stretch is part of the River Soar and Grand Union Canal system, and it’s controlled by Loughborough Soar Angling Society — a club formed way back in 1865. So, expect proper river angling rather than a polished commercial-lake setup. Find the crease, work the margins and keep an eye on the pace of the water.
There’s a useful mix of reported species here. Barbel, chub, bream, carp, pike, perch, roach and zander are all listed across the fishery information. That gives you plenty to have a go at, whether you fancy trotting for silverfish, a feeder approach for bream and chub, or sitting it out for something lumpier.
The wider River Soar is reported to hold carp over 25lb, although that figure isn’t specific to this exact stretch. Chub are commonly around 3–4lb in the wider society waters, with bigger fish possible, while pike run into double figures. Handy potential, but keep expectations sensible and fish the water in front of you.
Day tickets cost £5 and must be bought before you start fishing. There are no bank sales, with online tickets available through Soar Tackle. Day-ticket fishing runs from dawn until dusk, and night fishing isn’t allowed on a day ticket. Season-ticket holders may fish at night, subject to society rules.
Parking is a bit tight around the Sileby marina lane, so sensible verge parking is requested. The society gives the what3words parking location as drawn.lamplight.bracing. One important wrinkle: there’s no agreement with the Waterside pub for anglers to use its land, so don’t assume pub-side access is included.
For a river session, keep things mobile and watch the conditions. A little water colour can put chub and barbel on the munch, while steadier flows may suit float and light feeder work. A rod licence is also required in England and Wales. Bob on if you’ve got the ticket sorted before turning up.

How we'd fish Main water
carp
Zigs in the warmer months
In clear, deep water carp often sit up in the layers on warm days. A zig is the only way to get a bait in front of them.
- Start at half depth and move up or down a foot at a time until you get bites.
- Black or foam hookbaits work well on bright days.
- Keep it simple — no freebies needed.
carp
A bigger bed of bait at range
On wide, open water the fish move about a lot — a decent bed of bait at range holds a passing group long enough to get a bite.
- Find a clean, hard spot with a marker float and clip up so every cast lands on it.
- Spread the bait with a spod or throwing stick — little and often.
- Mix boilies, pellet and particles so there's always something left for the fish to graze.
- Match the hookbait to the freebies.
