The full rundown on River Ure
Ripon Piscatorial Association looks after roughly nine miles of River Ure fishing, running from Hutton Beck, upstream of North Bridge, to around Bishop Monkton. It’s a proper varied bit of river water, with shallow streams, deeper pools, glides and match-fishing sections all in the mix. Plenty there to keep you thinking, rather than simply dropping into the first swim and hoping for the best.
The streams section runs from Hutton Beck to about a mile downstream of Hewick Bridge. This is the shallower, more varied end, with reported roach, dace, grayling, perch and chub. Chub are reported to reach about 7lb, while barbel are reported to around 15lb and pike to roughly 20lb. Brown trout are also reported to about 3lb, and salmon may run through the water — although all fish must be released.
The deeper-water sections make up roughly half of the association’s River Ure fishing and extend on the Ripon side towards peg 192 at Bishop Monkton. Species here include dace, roach, perch, bream and the occasional large chub. Reported sizes include perch to about 4lb, bream to around 8lb and pike to roughly 30lb, so there’s a fair bit of scope beyond just scratching around for small silvers.
Approach-wise, it pays to treat this as a venue to explore. Take a sensible spread of kit and be ready to adapt once you’ve seen the swim. Float gear, light ledgering tackle and a few options for working deeper water would give you flexibility, but the best starting point is to ask RPA about current conditions, productive areas, access and any local preferences before you set off. A map book is included with first-year adult membership, which should help with planning the access points.
Access is available near Ure Bank Pond car park, the racecourse entrance, Ripon sewage works and other marked points. Anglers must use the specified parking and access routes, keep to the waterside and keep gates closed. Booking is through RPA membership or day-ticket arrangements rather than an online session-booking system. Adult membership is £70 annually, first-year adult membership is £75 including an access key and map book, and day tickets cost £6 per day. Remember, day tickets don’t cover Ure Bank Pond or Ripon Racecourse Lake.
The rules need checking before fishing, especially around dates and methods. The River Ure close season runs from 15–24 March inclusive. From 25 March to 15 June inclusive, only artificial fly, worm and minnow may be used. Fishing is limited to two rods during daylight hours, a current Environment Agency rod licence is required where legally applicable, and every River Ure fish must be released. Dogs and fires are banned on the riverbank, litter must go home, and there’s no general River Ure night-fishing permission advertised.

- In summer, try a free-lined slug or floating crust.

- Halibut pellet or small boilie over a bed of pellet.
