River Ouse Acaster
A very long, members-only stretch of the tidal River Ouse, with YDAA controlling the right bank from Naburn Weir to the Old Salmon Hut. The weir pool is the real draw, with roach, skimmer bream, chub, barbel and river carp on the cards.

River Ouse Acaster
The lowdown
- This is a proper long bit of river, with the main section running from Naburn Weir to the Old Salmon Hut. Three more sections are marked by posts with yellow tips.
- The weir pool can produce excellent catches of all species. It also holds specimen chub, barbel and river carp, with occasional salmon seen there.
- Roach and skimmer bream are named feeder targets in the pool. Maggot or caster are the go-to baits mentioned for this job.
- Away from the weir pool, quality roach can be caught throughout the season. Maggot, hemp and caster are all named tactics.
- Float fishing needs keeping on top of. The tide means the depth may need constant adjustment, so expect a bit of fiddling as conditions change.
- Feeder fishing can produce barbel, bream and silver fish. Keep an eye on the water, as levels can rise very quickly on this tidal section.
- There are no fishing platforms and no disabled access provision. It is very much a natural bank-style venue, so check the swim and footing before settling in.
- Access comes from Acaster Malbis via Intake Lane or Mill Lane. There is a river slipway at a sharp bend in the village, with the track continuing downstream past the slipway and moorings.
- Parking is just through the gated access at the top of the weir. Cars can use the riverside track after the hay has been cut, usually by late July, but driving it is at the angler’s own risk.
- No night fishing is allowed. There are no stated toilet facilities, either, so sort your kit before heading down the track.
- We're not sure on ticket prices for this one — check with the club or local regulations before you leave.
Methods: Feeder fishing is a solid shout for roach, skimmer bream, barbel and silver fish, with maggot or caster named for the pool. For roach away from the weir, try maggot, hemp or caster on the float and keep adjusting the depth with the tide.

Coarse fishing on English rivers is closed from 15 March to 15 June inclusive. That's the law for coarse fish on rivers — it's not a club rule, and game-fishing seasons work differently.
