The full rundown on Holme Pierrepont Country Park Lakes

Hackett Lakes Fishery is tucked away on Adbolton Lane at Holme Pierrepont, Nottingham, and it’s less than 4 miles from the city centre. So, if you fancy a proper session without burning half the day getting there, it’s a handy little option. Access is via Adbolton Lane, and the fishery’s directions warn anglers not to use Sandy Lane from the A52. Worth getting that bit right before you set off, rather than ending up on a scenic detour with all your gear in the motor.

There are two purpose-built fishing lakes on site. The official information doesn’t give them individual names or sizes, although a local report describes the smaller lake as roughly 3 acres and over 17 feet deep in places. That’s enough depth to make a decent plumb-up well worth doing. Spend a bit of time finding the shelves, changes in depth and any likely patrol areas before getting the rods clipped up. On a new venue, a few extra minutes with the marker or float can save plenty of faff later.

The smaller lake is described as suitable for match fishing, which should appeal if you like keeping busy and building a swim. Reported species include carp, perch, chub, roach and tench, so there’s more than one way to get a bend in the rod. You could fish positively for carp, work a lighter approach for the smaller species or keep things flexible until the bites show themselves. As ever, it pays to ask what’s been doing the business recently and whether the fish are showing in the margins, open water or around any obvious features.

Carp are a major part of the venue’s appeal. The fishery says more than 17,000 carp have been added since 2000. Carp are reported to approximately 27 lb in the smaller lake, while another listing gives them at around 20 lb in both lakes. Those figures vary, so treat them as useful guide numbers rather than anything set in stone. Bring sensible carp gear, make sure your unhooking kit is ready and don’t overlook the margins — close-in water can be well worth a look, especially once the swim settles down.

Day tickets are priced by rod count: £10 for one rod, £12 for two and £14 for three. One non-angling guest is free, with extra non-angling guests costing £5 each. Night fishing is available at £22 for one rod, £24 for two or £26 for three, with one guest free and further guests at £5 each. Night sessions must be pre-booked and paid for online, so get that sorted before travelling. The regular daily opening timetable and any fishing season or closure period aren’t stated, so check the booking details or contact the fishery before making firm plans.

The rules are nice and clear, but you’ll want the kit bob on before arriving. Barbless hooks only, maximum size 8, minimum 12 lb mainline, no braid, and free-running or semi-fixed rigs only. Bring an unhooking mat and carp-care kit, keep rods attended and take all rubbish home. Parking is available, but vehicles need to be left in designated areas after unloading. Dogs must be kept on leads, and overnight anglers under 18 need an adult with them. A maximum two-person bivvy is allowed, but tents aren’t.
