We don't publish an "ideal level" — nobody can promise one. Flood water is dangerous: if it's up and coloured, stay well back from the edge. Open River Ready
The lowdown
- This is proper meadow fishing, with the Cherwell running alongside private Long Meadow. A current BDAA book or day ticket is needed even to inspect the swims.
- Start downstream of the road bridge. The permitted bank is the left-hand side when fishing downstream, so keep your feet on the right bit of meadow.
- The stretch runs down to the point where the Cherwell meets the Oxford Canal. That river-and-canal connection gives the bottom end a cracking bit of character.
- Roach, bream, perch and chub are listed here. Dace are also named by BDAA, while barbel are only mentioned as rumours — so don’t bank on them.
- There’s no fishing in front of the houses. Keep that bit well out of your plan and stick to the permitted meadow bank.
- For coarse fishing, the season runs from 16 June to 14 March. Pike fishing runs from 1 October to 14 March, giving you a separate winter option.
- One rod is normally allowed. A second rod is only permitted for pike fishing, and then it must be with live or dead bait.
- Parking is in the lay-by over the road bridge. Handy enough, but remember this is private property: shut gates properly and don’t trample banks, fences or crops.
- Take all litter away from within 5 metres of your fishing position. Dogs and guns aren’t allowed, and fishing is by rod, pole and line apart from the stated crayfish exception.
Methods: Trotting, float work and a light feeder approach should suit the listed coarse fish, with sensible tackle for the Cherwell’s meadow swims. Pick the crease, keep things tidy and fish within the season and one-rod rule.
