Forden — BAA

A cracking three-mile run of natural, mobile River Severn at Forden, with fishing on the right bank above and below Cilcewydd Bridge. It’s BAA members-only water, best tackled light and on foot, with deeper holes, twists and bends to pick apart.

We don't publish an "ideal level" — nobody can promise one. Flood water is dangerous: if it's up and coloured, stay well back from the edge. Open River Ready

The lowdown

  • This is proper river fishing rather than a tidy little pond. The Severn is natural and mobile, with plenty of character under your boots.
  • The stretch covers roughly three miles, running upstream from above Cilcewydd Bridge and downstream to below it. Plenty of ground, then.
  • Fishing is from the right bank only. Keep that in mind when planning your route and don’t go wandering onto the wrong side.
  • The main features are deeper holes, twists and bends. Expect the river to keep changing pace, with likely holding water around the bends and in the deeper bits.
  • BAA recommends travelling light and fishing on foot. Bob on advice here — carry what you need, keep the faff down and stay mobile.
  • There’s mixed coarse-fish habitat, plus salmon are stated as present. Any salmon caught must go straight back under the River Severn emergency byelaw.
  • A sensible approach is to search the water rather than marry yourself to one swim. Work the crease, check the glides and give the deeper holes a proper look.
  • The stretch sits around Forden in Powys, with access described around Cilcewydd Bridge. BAA directs anglers to the car parks at Forden.
  • No fishing is allowed at night, so this is strictly a daylight venue. Plan the session around walking, watercraft and keeping a bit of colour in the river if conditions allow.
  • Don’t drive through the gate at the end of the track. You’ll need your current BAA membership card, which also carries the gate lock code.

Methods: Travel light and fish on foot, searching the deeper holes, bends, glides and creases. Mobile trotting or feeder work suits the natural, varied river, with the exact approach dictated by flow and depth.

Fish the club names

The club doesn't list species for this stretch, so we haven't guessed.

Key rules

  • BAA members only; non-members and unauthorised persons must not fish BAA waters.
  • A current BAA membership card is required for access and fishing.
  • All salmon caught must be returned under the stated River Severn emergency byelaw.
  • No fishing is permitted at night.
  • Members must not drive through the gate at the end of the track.
  • Fishing is from the right bank.

Coarse fishing on English rivers is closed from 15 March to 15 June inclusive. That's the law for coarse fish on rivers — it's not a club rule, and game-fishing seasons work differently.
